Everton reportedly appear set to sign 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon this summer.

According to CMTV pundit Fernando Mendes on Record, as relayed by Sport Witness, Everton are closing in on signing Matheus Nunes in the summer transfer window. The Merseyside club appear to have reached an agreement with Sporting CP to land the 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder.

Matheus Nunes joined Sporting CP from Estoril Praia in January 2019 and has since gone on to become a key figure for the Portuguese giants. The youngster was particularly impressive last term, even though he did not start every single game for the club in their scintillating Primeira Liga campaign.

However, the 22-year-old did feature in all but two games in the triumphant season, chipping in with three goals and as many assists. His progress since breaking into the Sporting first-team setup has duly been noticed, with Everton among the clubs that are keen on landing him this summer.

The interest from Everton makes a lot of sense amid the reported uncertainty surrounding Gylfi Sigurdsson owing to off-field issues. In addition, as per widespread reports, Abdoulaye Doucoure might not have the most secure of futures at Goodison Park.

As a result, Everton have been linked with quite a few midfielders this summer, including Aston Villa ace Marvelous Nakamba, with Nunes a viable target as well. And it now looks like the Toffees are closing in on securing the services of the Brazilian midfielder.

As per claims made by CMTV pundit Fernando Mendes (h/t Sport Witness), the 22-year-old has “already been sold to Everton”, although he has not made any mention of a transfer fee. However, if Mendes’ claims are indeed true, then Everton have got a solid deal in the form of Nunes.

The youngster has a taste of winning a league title now, and that experience would serve him well in a competitive league like the Premier League. And amid cutthroat competition, such an experience, as mentioned earlier, ought to come in handy. What now remains to be seen is if Everton do indeed end up securing the services of Nunes this summer or if the Brazilian remains at Sporting.
