Everton are reportedly closing in on the capture of PSV Eindhoven defender Denzel Dumfries as they are on the verge of reaching an agreement over a deal.

According to a report from Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Everton are getting closer and closer to signing Netherlands international defender Denzel Dumfries from PSV Eindhoven. The Toffees are on the verge of reaching an agreement with the Dutch outfit while talks over personal terms are also progressing with his agent, Mino Raiola.

Dumfries made his name at Dutch club Sparta Rotterdam, before signing for SC Heerenveen in the summer of 2017. Only a year later, the 25-year-old right-back was signed up by PSV Eindhoven, and he hasn’t looked back since. From being a regular to growing into the club captain, the defender has been a revelation at the Philips Stadion, contributing 16 goals and 20 assists in 124 games.

Now a regular for the Netherlands national team as well, Dumfries has 23 caps for the Oranje and was one of their most impressive players in the UEFA Euro 2020. The 25-year-old’s impressive run of form for club and country have put him on the radars of top clubs across Europe, with Real Madrid having taken an interest.

However, it is Everton who look set to land Dumfries this summer, with the Merseyside giants close to reaching an agreement with PSV over a transfer fee for the full-back. The Toffees are in need of reinforcements in the right-back slot given as Seamus Coleman is entering the final phase of his career and has battled injury problems in recent seasons.

Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey were used as right-backs by previous manager Carlo Ancelotti last season, but neither are natural players in the role, something that new boss Rafael Benitez seems keen on addressing. And that is what they seem to have done with the transfer of Dumfries now seemingly getting closer by the day.

Everton are shaping up for a busy week with multiple deals likely to go across the line. Andros Townsend is on the verge of signing after having completed his medicals, while Demarai Gray is also closing in on a transfer, along with goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. With Dumfries also likely to join, things are starting to look bright for Benitez and the Toffees.
