Real Madrid are considering a possible move to sign Riyad Mahrez from Manchester City in the summer transfer window.

As reported by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Riyad Mahrez has popped up on the radar of Real Madrid over the prospect of a move in the summer transfer window. As per claims made by Algerian national team head coach Djamel Belmadi, the 29-year-old is unhappy at Manchester City, thereby opening up the possibility of a switch to Real Madrid.

Riyad Mahrez joined Manchester City from Leicester City in the summer of 2018 following a superb four-year stint at the King Power Stadium, where he first rose to stardom. Indeed, Mahrez played a leading role in the Foxes’ shock Premier League triumph in 2016, even being crowned the PFA Player of the Year for the 2015/16 season.

At Manchester City, Mahrez has not always managed to recreate the highs of Leicester, although he has still shown a penchant for producing magical moments. Till date at the Etihad, the 29-year-old has managed a tally of 31 goals and as many assists in 120 appearances. Now, though, a door has been opened for Real Madrid to land the Manchester City wide man in the summer.

According to Algerian national team head coach Djamel Belmadi, Mahrez is not a happy camper at Manchester City due to a reduction in game-time this season, which could possibly pave the way for a summer move away from the Premier League club. This is where Real Madrid come in with their interest in him.

Real Madrid do seem to be in the market for an attacking reinforcement ahead of the summer, with Son Heung-min another Premier League player who has been linked with them in recent weeks. The Spanish heavyweights’ keenness to bolster their attack does make sense as well.

Eden Hazard, their most recent marquee signing, has not clicked one bit, with a spate of injuries hampering the Belgian’s progress. In addition, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has evidently been left dismayed by the inconsistencies of the youngsters, Marco Asensio, Rodrygo Goes and Vinicius Jr.

Vinicius, in particular, seems to be walking a tightrope at Real Madrid, who are reportedly ready to cash in on him this summer. And, Mundo Deportivo suggest that Los Blancos want Mahrez to come in as Vinicius Junior’s replacement in the summer, with the club ready to pounce on his unhappiness at Manchester City.

While Real Madrid’s priority has been and still remains Kylian Mbappe, their finances have been hit by the coronavirus pandemic, forcing them to look for economical alternatives. To that end, Mahrez would be a fine contingency plan, although it remains to be seen if Real Madrid do make a move for the Manchester City superstar this summer.
