FC Barcelona are determined to beat arch-rivals Real Madrid in the pursuit of Bayern Munich defender David Alaba this summer.

According to Mundo Deportivo, as relayed by Daily Mail, Barcelona are considering a move for David Alaba. The Spanish giants have shown a desire to sign the Bayern Munich defender, who has become one of the hottest prospects in the market due to the expiring contract that could see him leave the Allianz Arena for free in the summer.

Alaba has highly linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent weeks, with earlier reports even suggesting that the defender had agreed a four-year deal at the Bernabeu. Barca’s entry in this transfer saga, however, could complicate things as the Catalans continue their search for an ideal replacement for the ageing Gerard Pique.

The club has faced numerous financial difficulties in the ongoing campaign due to the pandemic. It has ultimately stifled their progress in the market, with the Blaugrana unable to pursue their big-money targets including Lautaro Martinez. As a result, Barcelona are now eyeing cost-effective options to bolster their ranks in the summer.

Sergio Aguero has been already linked with a move Camp Nou recently and David Alaba could be another excellent option. Available for free in the summer, the Austrian international could provide the experience as well as the quality that has been missing in Barca’s defensive camp over the past few years.

However, Real Madrid will be equally determined to secure the services of the Bayern Munich star, who can an ideal replacement for Sergio Ramos. The long-term Spanish centre-back may leave Santiago Bernabeu after the end of the season amid disagreements over his contract extension, with Paris Saint-Germain lurking in the shadows.

Bayern Munich could be the ultimate losers in this whole saga as they have very little power to prevent Alaba from leaving the club. The Bavarians are unwilling to meet the defender’s hefty wage demands, so his departure looks inevitable, with Jerome Boateng another star defender expected to leave Allianz Arena.

It suggests that at the end of the day, money could finally dictate Alaba’s future and that is where Barcelona could face problems. The Catalans have failed not only from a sporting perspective but also from a financial perspective in recent years, giving their arch-rivals Real Madrid the edge in this transfer saga that could come to an exciting conclusion.
