Sergio Aguero has once again emerged as a summer target for FC Barcelona, with his Manchester City contract expiring at the end of the season.

According to a report published by Mundo Deportivo, FC Barcelona have been offered the chance to sign Sergio Aguero. The Manchester City attacker has had his 2020/21 campaign marred by injuries and could soon leave Etihad Stadium, especially with his contract expiring at the end of the ongoing season.

Aguero, who shares a good relationship with Lionel Messi, is unlikely to extend his contract at Man City, meaning he could be available for a free transfer. It bodes well for a financially hit Barcelona that have appeared quite unwilling to splash the cash in the ongoing January transfer window.

In fact, the Catalans have opted to sign three of their top targets in Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Georginio Wijnaldum in the summer, when their existing contract with the respective clubs come to an end. And the club could follow a similar strategy in the case of Aguero.

Barcelona do indeed need a new striker in the upcoming season considering their struggles without Luis Suarez this term. Although Martin Brathwaite has performed above expectations, the Dane has failed to provide the productivity in the final third.

Aguero, in that regard, could prove to be an ideal replacement for Suarez. The Manchester City attacker has a lot of pedigree at the highest level of football. In fact, his tally of 180 goals in 284 matches makes him one of the best strikers to play in the Premier League history while the forward has also bagged 41 goals for the Argentine national team.

Aguero’s experience and quality, therefore, could be useful for Barcelona next season, especially if they can improve their creative department with the addition of Memphis Depay. The Argentine should also be an ideal bridge between the club’s transition to a new long-term forward.

Indeed, the current financial climate has crippled the Catalans’ powers in the transfer market. As a result, they have failed to lodge bids for young attacking sensations like Lautaro Martinez and Erling Haaland.

Aguero could thus provide the services in the number nine slot until the club eventually recovers from this ongoing economic crisis – making him an ideal short-term investment for the Blaugrana this summer.
