AC Milan are reportedly interested in signing Lucas Torreira this summer, with Arsenal open to parting ways with him.

According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Lucas Torreira has emerged on the radar of AC Milan. The Rossoneri are targeting the Uruguayan midfielder in a bid to revamp their midfield, with Arsenal open to prospect of selling him in the summer transfer window.

Torreira joined Arsenal from Sampdoria in the summer of 2018 and seemed to have hit the ground running in the first half of last season. However, as that campaign progressed, his levels dropped and the 24-year-old had become a squad player by the time 2019/20 began.

Indeed, Torreira has started less than half of Arsenal’s 52 games this season, with Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos the firm first-choice pairing under Mikel Arteta now. His situation at Arsenal seems to have opened the doors for a possible summer departure from the Emirates, with AC Milan now showing an interest in him.

AC Milan have made massive progress this season, even if their final position on the Serie A table does not necessarily suggest that. However, the Rossoneri ended their league campaign on a high, being the only team in the top-flight to not lose a single game upon the resumption of football in Italy.

Their performances were so impressive that they decided to cancel Ralf Rangnick’s appointment and continue to put their faith in Stefano Pioli instead. As far as the pursuit of Torreira goes, the interest does make sense, seeing as former Arsenal midfielder Ismael Bennacer is being targeted by a number of big clubs, including Manchester United.

Apart from Bennacer, Milan have also bid goodbye to Giacomo Bonaventura, while Lucas Biglia is in the twilight of his career. As a result, the Serie A giants desperately need a quality addition in midfield, thereby making Arsenal man Torreira a viable target.

The Uruguayan international’s prior experience in the league with Sampdoria means he might not take too long to get settled in at San Siro. As far as Arsenal are concerned, the Gunners are open to parting ways with Torreira, who is likely to fetch one of the highest sums for the club, if sold this summer.

The north Londoners are indeed only likely to invest in the squad using the money recouped from player sales. With Matteo Guendouzi expected to be offloaded as well, Arsenal are hoping to revamp their own midfield as well, although Torreira’s departure could mean they might have to buy two midfielders.

While they are hoping to sign Dani Ceballos permanently and bring Thomas Partey to the Premier League, Arsenal do need to keep their options open, with Xhaka and Joe Willock the only other options at Arteta’s disposal. As things stand, though, Torreira seems like he could be AC Milan bound and it remains to be seen if he returns to Italy this summer.
