Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are set to lock horns in the race to sign Real Madrid ace Sergio Reguilon.

According to a report published by ABC Sevilla, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are set to go head-to-head in the race to sign Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon.

The 23-year-old broke into Madrid’s first team in 2018-19 under Julen Lopetegui. He made 22 appearances for the Merengues, registering 3 assists in that time. However, Marcelo took his starting spot back when Zinedine Zidane returned to the club during the latter part of the season.

Under Zidane, Los Blancos started a squad overhaul last summer, bringing in several new names like Eder Militao, Rodrygo, Luka Jovic, Eden Hazard and, in Reguilon’s position, Ferland Mendy.

As a result, Reguilon was loaned out to Sevilla, where he was reunited with former gaffer Lopetegui. The Spaniard has been an undisputed started at the club. Till date, he has played in 22 games, netting once and setting up four more goals.

Sevilla do not have an option to buy Reguilon after his loan ends, and he will return to his parent club in the Spanish capital. However, Madrid could use this opportunity to cash in on their academy graduate, and give more time to Marcelo while they bring in reinforcements.

Tottenham and Arsenal are two clubs currently linked with the 23-year-old. Both of these clubs are in a tricky situation vis-a-vis their backline and desperately need new players.

Arsenal’s defensive woes have been the highlight of their campaign for years now, even though they’ve shown improvement under Mikel Arteta. However, they need to freshen up their backline to challenge for a top four spot.

Arteta has had to work with makeshift left-back Bukayo Saka in the absence of new signing Kieran Tierney, who has had injury issues since his arrival in England. Sead Kolasinac, on the other hand, does well in attack but has his fair share of problems defensively.

Arsenal have had to look for more options in this position now because of Saka’s current contract situation. The teenager has done an impressive job for the Gunners and has been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United among others, with his contract expiring this June.

Tottenham currently have only one proper left-back in the roster, in the form of Ben Davies. Jose Mourinho has promoted Japhet Tanganga, who has put in a shift in almost four different positions since. Tanganga is a solid defender but cannot be entrusted with doing the job at left-back in the longer run.

The club also signed Ryan Sessegnon on the deadline day in summer, but the Englishman has been used as a winger by Mourinho. Danny Rose was loaned out in the January transfer window and is expected to be offloaded permanently. This would warrant the addition of a new left-back for the North Londoners.

As per the report, there are ten clubs interested in Reguilon, including the likes of Borussia Dortmund and PSG. It will be very interesting to see how this transfer story unfolds in the coming weeks.
