Liverpool coach John Achterberg has confirmed that there has been a discussion about the possibility of signing former Tottenham goalie Michel Vorm.

In a recent interview with Dutch publication NOS, Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has revealed that the club are mulling over the possibility of signing goalkeeper Michel Vorm, who is currently a free agent after having been released by Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the last season.

Liverpool have some concerns with regard to their goalkeeping department early into the 2019-20 season. The Reds’ first-choice shot-stopper Alisson Becker, who won the Golden Glove last season, picked up an injury in their opening fixture against Norwich City and has been ruled out for a few weeks.

Having allowed Simon Mignolet to leave in the summer, the Merseysiders brought in former West Ham United goalie Adrian on a free transfer as backup for Alisson. The Spaniard, while helping Liverpool to the UEFA Super Cup triumph, hasn’t looked all too convincing, with his error against Southampton this weekend almost costing his side.

Moreover, Adrian had also picked up an injury after colliding with a pitch-invading fan after the Super Cup triumph. But, he started against Liverpool despite being concerns surrounding his fitness. Apart from the Spanish stopper, Liverpool also recruited Championship veteran Andy Lonergan on a free transfer, while 20-year-old Caoimhin Kelleher is another option.

However, Lonergan lacks experience at the topmost level of football, whereas questions linger over Kelleher’s readiness to take over the mantle on the big stage. And hence, the Merseyside giants seem to be exploring the possibility of bringing former Tottenham goalie Michel Vorm to the club on another free transfer.

Speaking to NOL, goalkeeping coach Achterberg said: “A good third goalie at a top club is not a superfluous luxury, I have always said. The arrival of Vorm has been discussed.”

The 35-year-old Vorm has spent a large portion of his professional career in the UK, having joined Swansea City from Dutch side FC Utrecht back in 2011. He spent three years with the Swans, before moving to Tottenham in the summer of 2014. He made 47 appearances for the North London giants, before departing this summer after his contract expired.

Liverpool had an interest in signing Vorm from Swansea, but were beaten to the chase by Spurs. However, they are now considering the possibility of signing the 35-year-old. A goalkeeper with over 100 Premier League apperances, Vorm has proven his credentials at this level and would be a better option than either of Lonergan and Kelleher.

Vorm’s arrival would certainly improve Jurgen Klopp’s squad in the goalkeeping department. But, it remains to be seen if Liverpool act on their interest or decide to stick with their current backup options.
