Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing former Manchester City starlet Jadon Sancho from German giants Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
According to a report from Metro, Manchester United are planning a swoop for England international and Borussia Dortmund sensation Jadon Sancho in the summer transfer window, in a bid to strengthen their attack.
The 18-year-old prodigy has been a huge hit in Germany, since leaving United’s local rivals Manchester City in the summer of 2017. Sancho is understood to have rejected a £30,000-a-week contract for the Premier League champions in order to join Dortmund in search of regular first-team football.
Sancho featured just 12 times in the Bundesliga last year, but made an impact, netting one goal and setting up four more. This time, however, the Englishman has been in sensational form and has been one of the chief driving forces behind Dortmund’s title charge.
So far in the 2018-19 campaign, Sancho has made 26 appearances across all competitions, coming up with exceptional returns of 7 goals and 12 assists. This terrific run of form saw the 18-year-old break into the England national team in October last year. He has featured three times for Gareth Southgate’s side till date.
Sancho’s rise to stardom with Dortmund hasn’t gone unnoticed, with La Liga duo Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly monitoring his progress, along with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. And now, Manchester United have joined the chase for the teenage sensation as well.
The 20-time English champions are already sketching out plans for the summer window and have held discussions with interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the areas within the squad that need to be strengthened. While a centre-back remains a priority for United, the right wing is another position that they are looking to bolster.
Manchester United have had problems on the right flank for quite a while now, with the lack of a natural wide player in the ranks being a cause of concern. Moreover, with Juan Mata being in the final six months of his contract, there are uncertainties over his future at the club, despite Manchester United tabling a new contract offer for the Spaniard.
Sancho, despite being only 18 years of age, has shown that he is the real deal. The former Manchester City starlet has been a revelation for Lucien Favre’s side this season and has been critical to their title bid, while he has also impressed on his European outings as well.
Sancho, who is valued at £90 million by Dortmund, signed a new deal with the club in October last year, extending his stay till the summer of 2022. However, the Germans have shown previously that they are not averse to selling players should the right offer come along.
Manchester United will have to shell out a huge sum of money if they are to sign Sancho, but should they be able to get their man, the Red Devils stand to reap the rewards for many years to come, while it will be very pleasing to get one over neighbours City as well. But, it remains to be seen if there is any progress made on this front in the summer.
