Manchester United are reportedly lining up a £70 million move for Jordan Pickford, who is seen as a potential replacement for David de Gea

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Jordan Pickford, who is being targeted as a potential replacement for David de Gea. The Red Devils are ready to splash the big bucks for the Everton goalkeeper, with a £70 million

The only way has been up for Jordan Pickford since his breakthrough campaign in the 2016-17 season at Sunderland. The Black Cats may have been on a downward spiral since then, but the Englishman is now one of the most coveted goalkeepers in the world, having also been spectacular at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Pickford has been in splendid form for Everton as well over the last 15 months or so, his error in last weekend’s Merseyside derby notwithstanding. His advent has led to widespread interest in his services, with Chelsea among those who unsuccessfully attempted to sign him in the summer. The latest club in his pursuit are Manchester United.

Goalkeeping is one area of the squad that has been stable over the last half-a-decade or so. But, David de Gea is non committal over signing a new contract, and with his current deal set to run out in 2019. Manchester United are believed to have triggered a one-year option in the Spaniard’s contract, but his uncertain position could end in a move away from Old Trafford.

The Premier League heavyweights have thus, been forced into the transfer market as they look to keep their options open, should de Gea call it quits next summer. Pickford is a viable target for Manchester United, who will have one of the most promising goalkeepers in the world in the English international.

The Red Devils have now stepped up their interest in the 24-year-old, with a £70 million offer in the works. But, luring Pickford away from Everton could be a tall order for Manchester United, with the player signing a new six-year deal this past summer.

With Manchester United’s own stock plundering with every passing game, Pickford might just be better served staying put at Goodison Park. But, the Red Devils will hope they can keep hold of de Gea and get him to sign a bumper new deal.

If not, a £70 million bid could be on the cards next summer, following which it will be interesting to see if Pickford leaves Everton to join Manchester United.
