David de Gea is reportedly a target for PSG, who are closely monitoring his situation amid a contract stalemate with Manchester United

According to a report by Daily Mail, PSG are keeping a close eye on David de Gea’s delicate contractual situation at Manchester United. The Ligue 1 champions are prepared to launch a big-money move for the Spaniard if he fails to agree a new deal with United, a prospect which is hanging in the balance.

De Gea is a name synonymous with whatever little success Manchester United have achieved in recent seasons, which has been a tough period for the club. A shining light in an otherwise largely mediocre outfit for the last few years, the Spanish international has been, by far, the best player for the Red Devils for over half-a-decade now.

But, Manchester United’s struggles at the start of the season seem to be the last straw for de Gea, who is stalling on signing a new deal at the club, even though widespread reports had earlier suggested that a renewal was a mere formality. The uncertain situation has piqued the interest of PSG, who appear eager to make a move for the 27-year-old.

Les Parisiens did bolster their options in goal this past summer by signing Gianluigi Buffon on a free transfer. In addition to the veteran custodian, PSG also have the ever improving Alphonse Areola, although the Frenchman has expressed concerns over his future, having had to share game time with Buffon at the start of the season.

Regardless of Areola’s situation though, de Gea will be a definite upgrade over both the options that Thomas Tuchel has at his disposal. PSG are thus, closely monitoring the goalkeeper’s situation at Manchester United, and will launch the offensive if the standoff between the two parties continues.

The Spanish international’s current deal at Old Trafford will run out next summer, although Manchester United reserve the option to extend it by 12 months. As things stand currently, the Premier League heavyweights look likely to trigger the extension option in order to preserve his value, if things do not go their way, and PSG come knocking at their door.

Manchester United’s priority remains to tie de Gea down to a new deal. But, if their current predicament, as far as the results are concerned, does not go away, the Spaniard might just end up departing, with PSG an attractive destination where he can regularly vie for titles.

A delicate situation that Jose Mourinho and Manchester United will hope to overturn by producing the required results to ensure de Gea’s continued presence at Old Trafford.
