Chelsea have reportedly opened talks with Inter Milan over the prospect of bringing midfielder Matias Vecino over to Stamford Bridge.

According to Evening Standard, Chelsea have reportedly paid heed to the demands of Maurizio Sarri. The new manager wants Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino. The player, who is also a target for AC Milan, is on the Blues radar, with the club opening talks with Inter Milan over the possibility of signing the 26-year-old.

Matias Vecino arrived at Inter Milan from Fiorentina in the summer of 2017. His debut season for the Nerazzurri was a resounding success as far as the player is concerned. 31 appearances to boot, the player became a vital cog within the first-team setup at Inter.

Vecino was also one of the regular faces for Uruguay at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The 26-year-old has been on the radar of AC Milan since the World Cup. But, Chelsea seem to have entered the race for the Uruguayan midfielder.

Maurizio Sarri has arrived at Chelsea. And with the advent of the former Napoli boss, there is an expectation to witness free-flowing football or as some refer to it, Sarri-ball. Jorginho has been brought in to inebriate the culture and quicken the pace of transition in terms of playing style.

But, Sarri wants Vecino as well in order to further smoothen the transition. The 26-year-old could also prove to be the answer, should Sarri deploy a 3-man midfield, with N’Golo Kante and Jorginho two assured starters. Also, should Kante leave, Vecino could act as a replacement.

However, the player is more likely being brought in to be the third man in midfield alongside Kante and Jorginho, with the player not really possessing the same skillset as the World Cup winner. In all likeliness, Jorginho and Vecino will be entrusted to bear the weight of bringing the creative input on the field while Kante goes about his business with his usual swagger.

Another factor is that Vecino knows Sarri-ball, having played under the manager at Empoli. The talks have started over a potential deal, with Inter Milan valuing him at around £31 million, according to reports.

What would be interesting to see if Vecino is being targeted as an alternative to Miralem Pjanic. The player was rumoured to be on Chelsea’s radar. But, recent updates suggest the Bosnian is edging towards securing a new deal at Juventus.

Nevertheless, Vecino’s history of having played under Sarri will surely be an asset and speed up the entire process. Chelsea fans are hoping to see some flamboyance on the field from their side under Maurizio Sarri. And Vecino might turn out to be an important connoisseur, should he become a part of the squad.
