Arsenal legend Ian Wright has claimed that playmaker Mesut Ozil would perform much better at Manchester United than with the Gunners

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has said that midfielder Mesut Ozil would be perform better at Manchester United than at his current club, according to Sky Sports. Ozil, 29, will be out of contract with Arsenal at the end of the season and has been sensationally linked with a move to bitter rivals Manchester United in the ongoing January transfer window.

Having entered the final six months of his deal with the Gunners, the playmaker is now free to negotiate with clubs outside of England for a free transfer in the summer.

However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger still has hopes that the club can convince Ozil to extend his contract and is prepared to lose the German international on a free, rather than cashing in on him this month. Manchester United have been credited with some serious interest in Ozil, with the Red Devils’ manager Jose Mourinho reportedly keen on reuniting a player who he has worked with in the past, during his time at Real Madrid.

And former Arsenal striker Ian Wright is of the belief that Ozil’s game would flourish more at the Old Trafford, given the quality of players that would be around him at Manchester United.

“I think he’s that type of player who will drag a team by its bootlaces through a game, but if your team is playing well, he’s going to sprinkle stardust all over the place,” Wright told Sky Sports when asked if he thought Ozil would perform better at United. With the players he’d be playing with at Man Utd as well, he is unbelievable.”

“He is just awesome, and with the right team, and the right movement in front of him, he is easily one of the best I’ve seen. He’s amazing. Is this difficult to say? Yeah. And we can’t keep arguably two of the best players, arguably in the history of the club, ability-wise. It’s sad times.” he added.

Despite his contract situation, Ozil has fared quite decently for Arsenal in the 2017/18 season. So far, the former Real Madrid man has scored four times and registered five assists in 18 Premier League appearances.

Since arriving at Arsenal from Madrid in the summer of 2013, for a then club-record fee of £42.4 million, Ozil has found the net on 27 occasions for the North Londoners and notched up 47 assists, on his way to winning three FA Cup trophies.

However, Ozil’s time at the Emirates is nearing an end, much like his teammate Alexis Sanchez. Widely regarded as one of the best playmakers around the world, Ozil leaving Arsenal to join Manchester United would be a bitter blow to the Gunners’ pride.
