Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on Uruguayan starlet Federico Martinez, who plays for Liverpool FC in Montevideo.

According to a report by The Sun, Liverpool have joined the race to sign Federico Martinez from Uruguayan club Liverpool FC. The 21-year-old midfielder is being pursued by several other clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Everton and many more.

Federico Martinez joined the youth academy at Liverpool FC Montevideo in 2010, rapidly progressing through the ranks at the club before breaking into the first-team setup in 2015. Two years on, the player is now a regular member in the first-team squad at Estadio Belvedere.

This season, Martinez has made a staggering 51 appearances for Liverpool, although he would arguably like to improve his record of three goals and six assists. Despite a modest tally though, the 21-year-old remains a highly rated prospect, and has drawn comparisons with Angel Di Maria, which is quite the high praise.

His rapid development seems to have been taken note of in Europe, with several top clubs monitoring his progress. The latest suitors in his pursuit are Liverpool, who have sent scouts to watch the player in action this season.

The report goes on to suggest that a move in the January transfer window is on the cards, with the player likely to be available for just £5 million. While Martinez hasn’t quite been prolific in his short senior career so far, the move for the talented youngster could make sense for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp is known to work wonders with promising talents, who are attack minded in their approach to the game. Furthermore, the player, who is adept at playing in midfield as well as on the wings, could offset the loss of Emre Can, who looks set to leave Liverpool, either in January or next summer.

But, Liverpool are not alone in pursuit of the Uruguayan, with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, AS Roma and Napoli interested as well. In addition to the big name clubs, Everton, West Ham United, Swansea and others are bidding to sign him as well.

So, a January transfer battle seems to be brewing in pursuit of Martinez, who is being primed for a great career, and a full international callup with Uruguay soon. It now remains to be seen if Liverpool are able to land the player, or if some other club secures his services instead.
