Manchester City have reportedly enquired about the possibility of signing Sergio Busquets from Barcelona this summer.

Spanish publication Sport have reported that Sergio Busquets is the subject of interest from Manchester City. With Pep Guardiola eager to add steel to his midfield, the Premier League club have made an enquiry over the availability of the veteran Barcelona midfielder this summer.

Busquets has been one of the cornerstones of Barcelona’s unprecedented success in La Liga and Champions League in the last decade, forging a formidable midfield trio alongside Andres Iniesta and Xavi for large parts of his career that guided the Catalan club as well as Spain to unprecedented success.

Over his near 10-year senior career, the 29-year-old has laid his hands on every trophy there is to lift for club and country, winning an astonishing 27 titles, while racking up well over 400 appearances for the Blaugrana in addition to 97 for Spain.

Suffice to say, Busquets has etched his place in history and is rightly regarded as one of the best holding midfielders of all time. It also goes without saying that the player can add value to just about every squad in the world. One such club that is making an audacious attempt to sign him are Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola has made a number of signings during his time as the Manchester City boss, and has been busy this summer as well, making improvements to his squad. One area though, that he hasn’t addressed thus far is the holding midfield position.

Indeed, with Fernandinho proving to be a reliable presence at the heart of midfield, the Spaniard didn’t have a real need to reinforce the position. However, the Brazilian blew hot and cold last season, and with Fernando joining Galatasaray, the Manchester City boss has a spot open in his squad.

With Yaya Toure and Ilkay Gundogan being more attack minded players, the need to sign a defensive midfielder has arisen. And so, Busquets has emerged as a viable target for Guardiola.

Hence, City’s hierarchy have contacted Barcelona to enquire over the Spaniard’s availability this summer. The Blaugrana’s stance on the situation, though, is that the player is not for sale, and understandably so.

The La Liga heavyweights have endured a disastrous time in the current transfer window, having reached their lowest ebb following Neymar’s sensational move to PSG. Should Busquets leave, things could suddenly go spiralling out of control, with no real backup to replace the Spaniard.

Thus, it is highly unlikely that Barcelona will let their prized asset leave, with the player too, in no hurry to call it a day at Camp Nou, meaning City would have to set their sights elsewhere for a midfield reinforcement.
