Manchester City have reportedly joined Liverpool in the race to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

According to a report in The Sun, Manchester City are set to table a bid to Borussia Dortmund for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Citizens have joined Premier League rivals Liverpool in the race to sign the Gabon striker in the summer transfer window.

Aubameyang is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world having progressed by leaps and bounds during his time at Borussia Dortmund. In fact, his predatory instincts and an electric burst of pace have truly made him a force to be reckoned with in Europe.

2016/17 was the most productive campaign of his senior career as Aubameyang hit the 40-goal mark in all competitions. 31 of those 40 goals came in the Bundesliga, which made him the league’s top scorer ahead of Robert Lewandowski.

However, after a fruitful four-year spell at Dortmund, Aubameyang looks set to leave the Signal Iduna Park this summer in search of a new challenge, as per widespread reports.

And the player has seen a host of suitors circling around him, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, PSG and others linked with him previously. Liverpool and Manchester City, though, have now taken the lead to sign the Gabon international.

At Anfield, Jurgen Klopp is set to strengthen several positions in the summer transfer window ahead of a return to the Champions League next season in order to ensure that their challenge in the premier European competition doesn’t die out as early as the 2014/15 season – the last time they played in the tournament.

A striker is believed to be one of his priorities, with Danny Ings nursing a long-term knee injury and Daniel Sturridge, too, struggling to overcome his unfortunate tryst with fitness issues. Divock Origi is yet to reach the level that Klopp desires from his striker and the Liverpool boss has, thus, set his sights on Aubameyang.

The Reds, though, face stiff competition for the player’s services, with Manchester City in the mix as well. Pep Guardiola has a wealth of attacking options at his disposal at the Etihad, with Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus his two choices for the role of a striker.

Therefore, the move for Aubameyang comes as a surprise, with the Manchester City boss already having the services of a prolific and an exciting young striker. Nevertheless, the move for Aubameyang will add a lot of firepower to his squad and help the Citizens mount more sustainable challenges for the Premier League and Champions League next season.

Guardiola is, thus, ready to make a bid for the player to land him at the Etihad in the summer. However, it remains to be seen if Aubameyang will be keen to make the move to City, considering he will get more regular game time at Liverpool instead.

The player won’t come cheap though, as Dortmund have slapped a £61 million price on him. While the amount is unlikely to pose much of a problem to City, it remains to be seen if Liverpool are willing to fork out the required money to sign him in the summer.
