Serie A runners-up AS Roma have reportedly submitted an enquiry to sign Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian this summer.

According to a report by Corriere Dello Sport, Matteo Darmian is likely to leave Manchester United this summer as AS Roma are toying with the idea of signing the defender. Darmian, who was also linked with Roma’s rivals Juventus, has come under Monchi’s radar.

Darmian endured a decent season at United as they finished fifth in the league but still managed to qualify to the Champions League owing to a stunning Europa League win. Although he recorded only 29 appearances in all competitions last season, he was particularly impressive in the Europa League final against Ajax.

The Italy international joined United from Torino back in 2015 and has been frequently linked with a return to his homeland since Jose Mourinho took charge at Old Trafford last summer. With big names like AS Roma and Juventus interested in obtaining his signature, a return to Italy seems likely for the 27-year-old.

The decline of Luke Shaw’s form and Marcos Rojo’s injury woes gave Darmian an opportunity to impose himself on the starting XI and he did put up a commanding performance in that do-or-die Europa League final. Although he is a strong defender, he has been less than spectacular under Jose Mourinho.

Darmian is physically strong and very disciplined which can allow Monchi to mould him in a way that would suit the Roma set-up. The Italian is skilled and that was on full display when he restricted Ajax’s youth power from moving forward. His performances may not be elegant but they are of substance.

In fact, if Darmian can carry that form into pre-season, he could actually diminish Luke Shaw’s role further.

However, staying back at Old Trafford might not be the best option for Darmian since Mourinho is linked with a move for Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur. There are also other players that the Portuguese manager could use in that area and that is likely to push Darmian further below the pecking order.

Moving to AS Roma can provide him better opportunities and regular playing time. It is understood that Monchi is recruiting him for Eusebio to field him as a right winger. Additionally, he will also receive adequate Champions League action if he does choose to move to his homeland.
