Manchester United have been told to cough up a whopping £50 million in order to land Eric Dier, with Tottenham firm on their asking price for the player.

According to The Telegraph, Manchester United have been told to cough up a massive £50 million from their transfer kitty in order to land English international Eric Dier in the summer. The Tottenham superstar is Jose Mourinho’s first choice for the holding midfield role, according to reports.

Eric Dier’s rise has been synonymous with Tottenham’s rise towards the top echelons of the Premier League. The player slotted straight into the first-team setup after a move from Sporting CP and his displays have seen him become a regular part of the senior setup for the Three Lions as well.

The recently concluded campaign further established his image as a versatile superstar, with the 23-year-old playing in all but two of the Premier League matches for his club while missing just a single Group Stage game in the Champions League.

The player was consistently rotated between the central defence and holding midfield by Mauricio Pochettino but Dier himself sees his future in the midfield, as has been touted since last season. Jose Mourinho is reportedly of the same opinion and has been eyeing the utility player for a while now.

Michael Carrick will play a diminished role in the first-team setup next campaign, accentuating the need to add a calming presence alongside the likes of Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba in the midfield.

While Dier may not possess the same passing range and vision as Carrick, the player has done a commendable job at Tottenham being the pressure soaker in the middle of the park. The same will allow more freedom to Herrera and especially, Pogba, who can then venture forward and be active in the dangerous third of the pitch.

Manchester United were linked heavily with a move for Fabinho, a similar utility player who has done well in the holding midfield. However, the latest updates have opined that Mourinho prefers a move for Dier and Matic more than the Brazilian.

The Portuguese is said to have earmarked Dier as the first-choice – failure to land the player will see Mourinho turn his attention to Matic, with Fabinho being the third option. Tottenham, though, look intent against negotiating a fee for the player and have slapped a £50 million price tag on the 23-year-old.

Dier does have four years left on his Spurs deal and while the price tag may be considerably high, his Premier League experience combined with the player being an England international as well as his long-term viability more than compensates for the premium.

Tottenham look set to lose some of their prized jewels, with Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Kyle Walker all being linked with exits from the club. And Eric Dier seems destined to follow suit as well.
