La Liga bigwigs Real Madrid and Barcelona will fight head-to-head in order to sign Ajax’s Colombian star kid Davinson Sanchez.

A couple of weeks back, both clubs played a stunning display of football in their El Clasico match where a stoppage time goal by Lionel Messi (which is also his 500th goal) gave the Catalonian club a well-deserved victory over their arch-rivals.

Now, that rivalry will occur off-field as well. According to a report by Don Balon, Barcelona and Real Madrid will clash over the signing of Colombian footballer Davinson Sanchez.

Reports suggest that both clubs are close to signing Sanchez. The defender has registered excellent numbers for Ajax – a team which has already edged closer to the Europa League final – and both Real Madrid and Barcelona desperately need reinforcements for their defence.

Pepe’s contract will be up in the summer and James Rodriguez is rumoured to move out of Real Madrid, while Jeremy Mathieu is likely to leave Barcelona. It makes perfect sense that both clubs would want to sign the Colombian centre-back, who has been the talk of the town for his creativity in the Ajax defence.

Ajax has set an asking price of £21 million for the 20-year-old. Early reports indicate that Barcelona might have an upper hand in the tussle since Luis Enrique has always enjoyed a good relationship with the Dutch club. However, Real’s club president Florentino Perez will not go down without a fight, especially when it comes to letting a prized target join a rival club.

In fact, rumours were rife that Ajax chief Marc Overmars was in Barcelona this week to discuss a deal, after Barcelona hastily scheduled a meeting to one-up Real Madrid. However, nothing has been confirmed so far.

There is no surprise that both clubs are vying to sign the defender. Sanchez has made 29 Eredivisie appearances for an Ajax side that sit second in the league and just a point adrift of leaders Feyenoord, which is a pretty good number for a player his age.
