Udinese fullback Silvan Widmer has emerged as potential summer target for Barcelona, as they look to fill the void left as a result of Dani Alves’ departure.

According to Spanish publication SPORT, Udinese defender Silvan Widmer has recently caught the attention of the Barcelona hierarchy and he has now been added to their ever-growing list of potential replacements for Dani Alves at right-back.

The Blaugrana are looking for a talented young player with a lot of potential, for whom they would not have to break bank and Widmer fits that profile. He joins the likes of Elseid Hysaj, Bruno Peres and Neslon Semedo to name a few, in a shortlist for possible suitors for right-back, a position currently occupied by Sergi Roberto.

23-year-old Widmer, is a full fledged Switzerland International currently plying his trade in the Serie A with Udinese. He came through the youth ranks of second-tier Swiss side FC Aarau and made his professional debut in 2011, before going on to make 70 appearances for them.

In 2012, he signed with Udinese but remained with Arau for the 2012/13 season. After making the move to the Stadio-Friuli, he would slowly but steadily win his place in the starting XI by playing a number of different positions, before finally making himself a permanent place in the first XI.

Though he is primarily a right-back, Widmer is equally adept going forward. In his second season at the club he kept switching between right-back and right-midfield. Last season he would be their first choice right-midfielder and this season, he has returned to being a defender.

While Sergi Roberto has done a decent job at right back this season, the lack of experience is obvious. With Aleix Vidal frozen out of the team since the start of the season and likely to leave in the summer, it is clear that Barcelona’s top priority this summer should be to recruit a talented young right-back.

His experience of over a 170 senior games, his youth and his versatility would surely appeal to those at Barcelona as they look to recruit a top quality right back at the earliest to relieve Sergi Roberto of his troubles, and more importantly mount a stronger title challenge next term.
