The Premier League veteran and former Chelsea striker believes his ex-club’s arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur have what it takes to win the League title in the near future.

Fernando Torres made a name for himself in the Premier League with Liverpool, amassing 65 league goals in four seasons for the Reds. His subsequent £50 million move to Chelsea in 2011 didn’t go as well as expected, with the Spaniard scoring just 20 league goals in four and a half seasons with the Blues. Chelsea fans who don’t rate his time at Stamford Bridge too highly will now be even more incensed at his recent comments.

The 32-year-old Atletico Madrid striker recently said that Spurs have what it takes to find Premier League success very soon.

“It’s an amazing club, they have amazing fans. When I was in England, it was always special to go to White Hart Lane and play against them,” said Torres ahead of Los Rojiblancos clash against Tottenham in the International Champions Cup, according to The Daily Express.

“Pochettino is doing a great job mixing these talented young players they have with more experienced players.

“They’re doing things really well. Last season they were really close to winning the Premier League and they are on their way, but in the future they will do it.”

Tottenham finished in third place last season, behind champions Leicester City and Arsenal. A last minute capitulation against West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea and Newcastle United destroyed the title hopes of Mauricio Pochettino and his men. They had spent the majority of the season being close on the heels of Leicester, but were undone in the tail end of the season by none other than Torres’ former club Chelsea.

Spurs will look to go all out for the title this season, having made some key signings in the summer and retained the strong core that almost took them all the way last season. However, they have a difficult job ahead as their title rivals are also recruiting heavily this summer. It will be a clash of titans in the Premier League next season, and it will be interesting to see how the underrated managerial mastermind that is Mauricio Pochettino will fare against the likes of Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho.
