Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s statute in his hometown Madeira was vandalised by miscreants who painted rivals FC Barcelona’s star man Lionel Messi’s name and number on its back.

The statue in Funchal, Real Madrid and Portugal striker Ronaldo’s hometown, was painted in Red by the vandals.

Ronaldo’s statue painted with Messi’s name

Having recently ended Ronaldo’s  two-year reign on the Balon d’Or, Lionel Messi found his name painted on the back of the statue of the native of Madeira. The statue was unveiled in 2014 in the presence of the Portugese captain’s teammates, friends and relatives.

Reports in Spanish media, as cited above, states that the statue was vandalised earlier on Tuesday following Lionel Messi winning the Balon d’Or award for the best player in the world for the fifth time.

The report went on to add that the statue was cleaned by the end of the day, and the vandals were yet to be identified by the officers.

Ronaldo and Messi’s rivalry has been, in their own words, a creation of the media. With both players appearing very friendly in the recent years’ Balon d’Or ceremony.

Last year, Messi was captured interacting with Ronaldo’s son, while Ronaldo was seen graciously applauding when Messi was crowned the winner this year. Another picture of Ronaldo with his arms over Messi’s shoulder was also clicked during this year’s ceremony.
