Leicester win the title with two games to spare, while Newcastle inch closer to survival.

With just two games to go in one of the most surprising Premier League seasons, Leicester City delayed the opportunity to celebrate at Old Trafford. However, a draw between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on Monday meant the Foxes clinch the title.

Leicester win the title

Manchester City v Leicester City

This season’s Premier League has been all about Leicester. Having escaped from relegation just one season ago, they have beaten all football norms by becoming only the 6th team to win it.  Playing away from home at Old Trafford, Leicester City were just three points away from winning the title and celebrating a victory at the home of a team whose squad are valued at 8 times than them.

However, Leicester had to shelve their plans to celebrate as their game came to a hard fought one all draw. Although the game had two brilliant goals from Anthony Martial as well as Wes Morgan in the first half, the two teams had to settle for a point each. Leicester needed two more points to win the Premier League with two games remaining in the season.

Tottenham, on the other hand, have been an extremely impressive side with the best scoring rate as well as defensive record. Hot on the heels of the Foxes, Tottenham needed to win all three of their remaining games and hope for Leicester to lose their remaining two if they were to lift the trophy. Nevertheless, in what seemed to be the most intense London Derby at Stamford bridge, Chelsea came back from a two goal deficit to equalize to gift Leicester City its first ever Premier League title.

Fight for Champions League

There is still some good news for Tottenham Hotspur this season. With the draw against Chelsea, Spurs secured their spot in next season’s Champions League. The fight for the remaining two Champions League spots are now being contested my Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and West Ham United. With 8 points separating third placed arsenal and 6th place West Ham, any of the four teams have a chance to make it into the top four. Arsenal, with their victory, moved 3 points short of bitter rivals Tottenham Hotpsur. A victory in the next fixture will guarantee Arsenal its place in the Champions League and would also give them a chance to leapfrog Tottenham on the last day of the Premier League.

Manchester City, however, need to win both games if they wish to finish fourth as Manchester United, although 4 points shy, have an extra game in hand. West Ham United too are in the race for the Champions League spot. With a comfortable three goal victory against West Bromwich Albion, West Ham’s tally comes up to 59 points. However, their task, much like Tottenham’s, is not only dependent on their performance but also on their rivals dropping points.

The relegation battle

The relegation battle is close as ever as two of the three teams fighting for survival made up a few points to enable them to push for survival in the coming weeks. Aston Villa, who were the first team to be relegated, lost to Watford as their dismal season goes from bad to worse. Norwich, playing away from home, allowed Arsenal to inch closer to their coveted Champions League spot after they lost to a solitary goal by Danny Welbeck.

Newcastle United, who found themselves in the 19th spot before their fixture, beat Crystal Palace through a thrilling Andros Townsend free kick. They have now climbed to the 17th spot, but are still in the danger zone as Sunderland and Norwich have a game in hand. Their last two matches are against Aston Villa and Tottenham, but victories in both fixtures still does not guarantee safety.

Norwich City are yet to face Manchester United, Everton and Watford. Having beaten United in the reverse fixture and drawn against Everton, Norwich can hope to replicate their performance in a bid for survival. Sunderland, on the other hand, have to face Chelsea, Everton and Watford and similarly require three victories to guarantee survival. The relegation battle will boil down to the last day of the Premier League where two teams will go down along with Aston Villa.

Liverpool drop points

Liverpool lost three goals to one against Swansea City away from home as they make a push for the Europa League spot. With Manchester United, West Ham United and Southampton currently occupying the three Europa League spots, Liverpool missed the opportunity to replace Southampton at seventh place with their loss. Although Liverpool are playing the semi-finals of the current edition of the Europa League, they are in danger of getting knocked out by Villarreal. Hence it will be crucial for them to at least qualify for the Europa League if they are unable to win the cup this year.
