S.S. Lazio’s versatile defender Stefan Radu is a target of English Premier League clubs Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United’s new manager Luis Van Gaal had earmarked SS Lazio defender Stefan Radu as an improvement on out of contract Patrice Evra. Manchester United were on the drivers seat but the latest developments claims that Tottenham Hotspur has joined the battle for the versatile defender.

S.S Lazio’s disappointing campaign in Italian Serie A ended when they finished in 9th position. Most of their star players are expected to depart from the club in search of greener pastures alfter another poor campaign. The lure of European competitions or a better league will be appealing to them. Romanian International Stefan Radu is a star player in the current Lazio side after establishing himself as a regular. 27-year-old Stefan Radu has played over 150 Serie A games since joining Lazio in 2009, and has good European experience under his belt. He is versatile enough to play at left back or at center back, and this has been noticed by some of the elite clubs in Premier League.

English Premier League side Manchester United are looking for defensive reinforcements, as club captain Nemandja Vidic and veteran defender Rio Ferdinand left Old Trafford after a disappointing campaign. France left back Patrice Evra might join them in exit gate as his contract is on the verge of expiry, and the club is looking for alternatives for Luis Van Gaal’s tenure at Old Trafford.

Lazio defender Stefan Radu appeals to them in both left back and center back positions, and some rumours states that the Dutch manager Luis Van Gaal wants him to occupy the left back slot next season. Without the lure of Champions League or Europa League, Manchester United are also in a similar situation as Lazio. But their giant status and bigger brand will be enough to convince a player of Stefan Radu’s pedigree to join the Red Devils camp. Manchester United were believed to be closing in on the Italian, who was a target of Manchester City last summer. Things have taken a twist with manager-less Tottenham Hotspur also entering the equation.

Tottenham’s think tank includes Italian Franco Baldini, who is an expert on Serie A. Baldini seems to have convinced chairman Daniel Levy about Stefan Radu’s abilities to plug the holes in their leaky defence. Danny Rose’s injury had caused serious problems for Tottenham defence last season, and they believes that Stefan Radu can provide the solution for their problems. The presence of Romanian center back Vlad Chiriches is an advantage for Tottenham, who also has Europa League matches to play next season when compared to Manchester United.

The transfer is at a nascent stage and there are no clear favourites at the moemnt. Can Tottenham Hotspur surprise Manchester United by bringing Stefan Radu to White Hart Lane?
