Recently appointed as the manager of Manchester United, Dutch coach Van Gaal hailed Robin Van Persie as a ‘fantastic’ Captain after the United striker scored a brilliant volley to draw their friendly international fixture with Ecuador.
Currently concentrating on leading Netherlands to the World Cup in Brazil next month, Van Gaal was earlier appointed as the new Manchester United manager and will take over the reins after his World Cup duties this summer. He will be tasked with the responsibility of rebuilding the team from scratch this summer. With Vidic and Ferdinand leaving the club this season and Evra likely to be on his way out too, Manchester United will also see a new captain next season, one that will be appointed by Van Gaal once he officially takes over as the manager. Though Wayne Rooney was the most-likely candidate under Moyes’ regime, it seems that Robin Van Persie too could be considered by Van Gaal who complimented his attitude after the international friendly.
“Even coming from a bad injury, he scores a fantastic, unbelievable goal, just brilliant. I was happy with his performance, but he is also a fantastic captain — and that is important, too.”
Van Gaal’s comments on Van Persie as a player and as a captain could give us an insight into what is to follow once the manager takes control of Manchester United. He spoke about the need to have a special relationship with his Captain, insisting that Van Persie was his ideal choice in the national team as he shared the same ethics as Van Gaal.
“I think you always make a player captain when you have the same morals and philosophy as they do. Not only about football and tactics and what is happening on the pitch but about life as well.”
“We click and I think that’s very important. I believe that Van Persie and Van Gaal share the same philosophy.”
“He is my captain. He’s my top scorer in the one-and-a-half years that he has played under me for the national side. He became all-time top scorer of the Dutch team and he plays superb football.”
Meanwhile, according to reports, Van Gaal has asked Manchester United to pursue Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and Hummels after identifying the three Bundesliga players as his prime target for the upcoming transfer window. He is also keen to bring Tony Kroos and Luke Shaw to Old Trafford, players who were identified by David Moyes during his spell at Manchester United.
While Manchester United need to rebuild their squad this summer, it remains to be seen how much they are capable of spending this summer. Transfer reports have linked the club with every big player this season and while there is definite interest towards players like Tony Kroos and Marco Reus, it is not confirmed if the club will actually make a move for the rest of the big names. It will be surprising to see Manchester United bid for Arjen Robben, who despite being one of the best wingers in the world, is on the fag end of his prime career. It will also be difficult for the Red Devils to buy both Muller and Kroos in one summer from Bayern Munich who will not give up on their young talent without putting up a fight. On the other hand, Hummels could be a realistic target as United are in urgent need of a centre-back and the German defender could be persuaded to come to England in the hope of big money and eventual trophies.
