Liverpool have switched their focus on Barcelona attacker Pedro after Southampton put a 25m mark on their captain Adam Lallana,
Brendan Rodgers has insisted that he wants quality and not quantity in the summer and his transfer targets have illustrated his point. There were reports that Southampton skipper Adam Lallana’s deal was all but done and the transfer was only imminent. However, latest reports suggest that the club is asking for £25m for their prized asset, a fee Liverpool management would be apprehensive to pay.
Reports now claim that Brendan Rodgers wants to lure Barcelona star Pedro to Anfield. The 26 year old will be part of the Spain team that would be defend their World Champions title at the world cup next month in Brazil. However, his future at Barcelona remains uncertain as new manager Luis Enrique has suggested that their could be a major overhaul at the club with a massive clear-out after a trophy-less season for the Catalan giants
‘The players must know that you cannot let a year pass at Barca. If they are not at the level required then there will be changes’, he said
‘We will reinforce the team in the best way possible, to be as competitive as possible. There is a market there – teams ask a lot of money for players. You must manage it all. We will reinforce, maybe in all lines of the team, to have the best players for the club and for me.
‘I do not want to talk too much about individuals. Good and important players will stay. We will look at everyone and then see what we do. We do not have to make decisions now. We have time.’
Brendan Rodgers has said earlier this month that the criteria for his summer signing would be players who were ‘multi-dimensional’. The Liverpool boss had said, ‘Our criteria that we look for is players with strong technique and football intelligence. You’ll get some players who are specialists and who need to play in particular positions, but if we can get players in who are multi-functional, and can play in different roles and are multi-dimensional in their work, it sets us up and gives me more options as a coach.’
Pedro is a player that fits the type of player Rodgers is looking for. The Spain star plays as a winger but is versatile enough to play anywhere in the attack. Pedro scored 15 goals and grabbed 10 assists in 37 appearances for Barcelona in the league.
The 26 year old is likely to cost Liverpool £20 million and looks like a good investment for the squad. Liverpool need a left winger and have been linked with the likes of Yevhen Konoplyanka, Antoine Griezmann to fill the spot. The acquisition of Pedro would add immense quality to the Reds attack. Rodgers would hope he can get a deal done with the La Liga club and rope in the player who could prove imperative as the Reds look to make a title challenge next season along with doing well in their return to the Champions League.
