Liverpool are eyeing Borussia Dortmund’s full back in the summer
Reports suggest that Brendan Rodgers has identified the German team’s full back- Marcel Schmelzer- as the one to fill in the left back spot for next season. The story has been confirmed by the German daily BILD.
The 26 year year old has a contract with the Westfalenstadion club till 2017, but Liverpool are keen on bringing in the player to address the left back problems the club has suffered in the recent past.
Jose Enrique, Liverpool’s first choice left back, has been out with injury for almost the whole season. His absence has forced manager Rodgers to play home grown Jon Flanagan as the left back. The 21 year old Englishman has taken the opportunity with both hands and impressed constantly.
Aly Cissokho, the left back brought in from Valencia for the season, would probably depart without their being a permanent deal in the offing, as the full back has failed to impress whenever he has stepped on the pitch. Marcos Rojo was the player Liverpool were being linked with, to solve this conundrum, but the interest in the player has died out.
Liverpool currently sit atop the Premier League standings, but it has been visible throughout the season, that the club is not strong at the back. There have been a lot of times when the attack has had to rescue the defence. Rodgers will therefore feel the need to bolster his defense in order to compete in the Champions League next season.
Schmelzer has featured 25 times for Dortmund this season. He has cored a goal and also has four assists to show for his outings on the pitch. He is a pacey defender and is a hard worker, which shows by his never say die attitude on the pitch. He runs ceaselessly and makes forward runs. trying to set up attacks, along with tracking back for his primary duties and making sure the opposition donn’t score cheap goals. He is a good crosser of the ball and it would be especially inviting for Rodgers to see the width he would add to the game, by passing/crossing the ball to Suarez and Sturridge.
There is no reason why Schmelzer is not happy at the German club. But the rise of 21 year old Erik Durm in the left back role has also been mighty impressive and this might force the 26 year old to consider his options at the end of the season.
THT Verdict- A Possibility
Liverpool know the value of adding to their vulnerable spots in the summer. They would be competing in four competitions and thus, would want to play ‘brilliant’ players and not just ‘good’ ones. Jon Flanagan has stepped up whenever asked to, but the arrival of Schmelzer would mean that Liverpool have within their ranks, a really brilliant player for that spot. Flanagan would be the ideal player to have in the squad as his back up.
Liverpool should seriously pursue this transfer. The confirmation by leading Bundesliga journalists and websites all but confirms the fact that the Merseyside club are seriously after the 26 year old. Hence, this transfer is a possibility in the summer.
