The Spain international leapt to the defence of the Blaugrana’s record scorer after critics suggested his best form is behind him after some poor performances in recent weeks.
Directors at Camp Nou are rumoured to be weighing up whether or not to sell the Argentina international, but Iniesta thinks he is already in the best place.
“I have no doubts about Leo” he said. “He should retire here. He’ll never find a better place and Barça will never find another player like him.”
Iniesta is also being realistic about his team’s hopes of winning the league. Having already been eliminated from the Champions League and defeated in the Copa del Rey final, Barca now have only the league title to play for but lie four points behind Atletico Madrid in second place.
“If we are to have any chance, then we’ll have to win all four of our remaining games” he commented. “The worst thing in football is when matters are out of your own hands.” However, he has positive memories of similar situations, when he was a child, of how the Dream Team became league champions thanks to Tenerife’s amazing defeats of Real Madrid on the final days of the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
Barcelona saw their transfer ban suspended by FIFA, allowing them to sign players this summer and Iniesta is delighted the squad can be strengthened.
“It is great news for the club to be able to continue to improve, independent of whether we win trophies or not. Barcelona always has to improve,” he continued.
Despite the pessimism among the club’s fans, Iniesta insists that Barca will keep battling to win the championship in their remaining games.
“For me failure is when you try to do things and they do not come off, but we are still trying and we will keep going until the end,” added Iniesta
“There is still some possibility if we win all four matches, but the worst thing in football is not to have to be able to depend on yourselves.”
Tiki-taka style of Barcelona has received lot of criticism off late. However, Iniesta is adamant that their style is their identity and there will be no compromise on the style of Football Barcelona plays.
Iniesta added that “we have gone through some very abnormal circumstances this season and it does grind you down … But once the season is over we’ll analyse things and talk about what we have to do … Our style is not be negotiated, but apart from that, Barça cannot close its doors to any players.”
