Many reports coming out from Spanish media have linked Lionel Messi with a move away from Barcelona off late. However, it is understood that the Argentine maestro on verge of his contract extension with Blaugrana.
Spanish website Marca has reported today that Barcelona hope to officially announce over the next few days a new and improved deal for Leo Messi, one that clears up any lingering doubts surrounding the player or the club’s intentions, as well as confirming that all parties are singing from the same song sheet.
This deal could be announced after the meeting that is scheduled for the beginning of next week. Jorge Messi, who is currently in Argentina, is expected to arrive over the next few days and one of the first things in his diary is a meeting with Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Report claim the sides are 85% of the way to an agreement with the details to be finalised before Messi can be made the highest paid player in the world.
Barca are said to be willing and eager to elevate Messi to such a position but are keen to install clauses in the contract that will come into effect depending on the club’s success. Messi’s salary will be fixed but should Barca be successful, Messi will be in line to earn more.
The deal has very clear, solid foundations. Barça believe that he is the best player in the world and plan to make him the highest-paid too. All that is left is to thrash out some of the finer points related to his salary and add-ons, although these should not present too many problems.
Messi currently earns €16m per year after tax, between his salary and add-ons. His bonuses are easy to achieve given that they involve playing 65% of the club’s games and qualifying for the Champions League. Barça now plans to elevate their star’s pay package to the heady heights of Ronaldo’s.
Messi made it clear that his plan has always been to end his career at Barça, adding “as long as they want me.”
It is noted that talks are taking place in order to up Messi’s earnings, not to extend his stay at the club, although a one-year extension until 2019 could be offered. Despite previous speculation suggesting Messi could leave the club this summer.
Paris Saint-Germain were said to be watching developments closely but recent report rejects the interest from the club as a reason for Messi’s perceived drop in form.
Messi is said to have always wanted to stay at Camp Nou while Barca are preparing to rebuild the side around Messi after this disappointing season comes to a close.
Meanwhile, Barcelona’s season is likely to end trophyless after Atletico Madrid stormed into the La Liga lead. Gerardo Martino’s side also suffered a Champions League exit to Diego Simeone’s improving team and recently lost the Copa del Rey final against fierce rivals Real Madrid.
