Having earlier written to the fans reassuring them of his ability and thanking them for their continued support, David Moyes has now publicly defended Robin Van Persie, rubbishing claims of him being ‘disillusioned’ at Manchester United.
The Dutch striker has come under the scanner for his comments after United’s 2-0 defeat against Olympiakos in the Champions League. Robin Van Persie criticised his team-mates for ‘disturbing’ his runs on the field.
“Our fellow players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in. And when I see that it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well.”
“So that forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. And unfortunately, they’re often playing in my zones. I think that’s a shame.”
There is a lot of speculation surrounding the striker’s future at Manchester United with many believing that he is looking for a way out of Moyes’ camp this summer. However David Moyes seemed confident of Van Persie’s future at United and claimed that the striker’s comments were taken out of context.
“I actually travelled back after the France v Holland game, with Robin and Patrice Evra.”
“If you actually read the whole transcript, I think it was taken out of context… we understand fully.”
“Robin is a really good player and we will do everything possible to make those opportunities work for Robin. A lot of what has been said (about Van Persie) isn’t correct.”
Former Dutch international Ronald de Boer has hit out at Moyes’ style of football and indicated that Robin Van Persie will leave Old Trafford if United are not in contention for trophies.
“Van Persie wants to compete for trophies and everything this year looks out of sight. It’s very disappointing for a player of his quality. I don’t think he’s enjoying the football United are playing. He’s a team player but he likes to play beautiful football and that isn’t the case at the moment.”
He said that Moyes will have to invest heavily in new youngsters if he is to convince Robin Van Persie of his ability to win titles.
“Man United need to refresh their squad. Some of their players have had fantastic careers but it’s time to move over and let some youngsters come through.”
“Robin feels that, if this is happening, he will of course stay. But, if there’s no investment in new, young, great players from other clubs, then he will move.”
However David Moyes brushed aside De Boer’s claims and refused to answer if there was any truth in the comment.
“I couldn’t reply to that and I wouldn’t know how Ronald de Boer would know that.”
Much is being said about Robin Van Persie and his future at Old Trafford. Ronald de Boer is not the only person speaking of the Dutch striker’s disillusionment at Old Trafford. Dutch coach Raymond Verheijen earlier commented that Van Persie wouldn’t have moved to Manchester United had he known that Sir Alex Ferguson will be leaving the very next season.
Though David Moyes has claimed that Robin Van Persie is settled at Manchester United, recent reports indicate otherwise. It will be interesting to see if Moyes can retain the striker’s faith in his abilities or whether Van Persie will seek a move out of Manchester knowing well that the ‘Chosen One’ will not be able to deliver trophies during his playing career with the Red Devils.
