Eden Hazard is likely to be rested as Chelsea FC take on Liverpool FC, while Ramires serves his suspension.
Chelsea travel to face Liverpool in what will be the title deciding match at Anfield today and a lot of eye will be on Jose Mourinho’s team selection following his comments after their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. Mourinho threatened to field a weakened side in this game as he felt that FA didn’t help them with the schedule and the team’s performance in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final clash might suffer due to this.
Chelsea faced further injury blows during their midweek clash against the Spanish side as both Petr Cech and John Terry had to be substituted due to injuries. Mourinho has earlier revealed that Terry and Cech’s season might be over, although the England defender does have a chance to appear in the Champions League final if Chelsea make it through. Eden Hazard, whose last appearance was in the 2-0 win over PSG in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie, is yet to recover from his injury and is unlikely to feature at Anfield as Chelsea look to have him fit before the second leg of their tie against Atletico. The fact that both Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel are suspended for the second leg has compounded Mourinho’s worries.
Mourinho has insisted that his side are not in a position to lose any further players to injuries and that Samuel Eto’o, who started against Sunderland, is a doubt for this game with a minor problem.
“I lost the goalkeeper, John Terry, Hazard, Mikel, Lampard. Do you think if I lose one more player I have any chance to try to play in the Champions League final? I don’t think we have a chance. I can’t lose more players, especially in some positions, because I don’t have them.
“Eto’o has a minor problem in his knee and he’s not ready. With Petr Cech, I suppose his season is over. They are analysing the situation but it looks like he will need surgery” – The Chelsea manager said.
Mourinho also revealed that Chelsea’s priorities at the moment lies with the Champions League.
“The priority is the Champions League because if we win two matches we win it. I have to defend Chelsea.
“In the attacking areas we have Torres, Demba, Schurrle Oscar Willian, Salah. If you lose one you have another one, but there are positions where if you lose one you don’t have any more, I just don’t have them.” – Mourinho added.
Ramires will also miss this match against the league leaders as he serves his suspension, after he was reprimanded for an off the ball event where he dealt a blow to Seb Larsson’s face during the match against Sunderland.
Jose Mourinho could make as many as six changes to the side he fielded against Atletico and he is likely to stick to the counter-attacking 4-3-3 formation as he looks to stifle Liverpool. Mark Schwarzer will replace the injured Petr Cech in goal, while Branislav returns to his role at the right back. Cesar Azpilicueta will be rested for this game, which means Ashley Cole will continue his role in the side, while David Luiz moves back to the center of the defence to replace the injury John Terry.
Lampard and Mikel are suspended for the upcoming midweek clash, hence the duo is expected to start in this game alongside Nemanja Matic. Mohamed Salah will start on the right wing of the attack, while Fernando Torres makes way for Demba Ba. Andre Schurrle will replace Willian on the left wing.
Expected starting line-up (4-3-3): Schwarzer (GK); Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Cole; Lampard, Mikel, Matic; Salah, Ba, Schurrle
