Chelsea have opened talks with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid over the possibility of signing Brazil left back Filipe Luiz. Diego Costa and Tiago are also expected to join Jose Mourinho’s side in summer.

There is a good working relationship between English Premier League side Chelsea and La Liga champions Atletico Madrid. Last two seasons saw Chelsea’s Belgium goal keeper Thibaut Coutois enjoying his loan spells at newly crowned La Liga Champions Atletico Madrid. If Atletico Madrid benefited from their relationship with Chelsea in the past, the Premier League side is planning to take advantage of it in the summer.

Chelsea are expected to wrap up the deal for Atletico Madrid’s free scoring striker Diego Costa. The Brazilian turned Spaniard matched Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for goals in the 2013-14 La Liga campaign and is expected to move to Stamford Bridge in a £31.8 million deal. Chelsea on the other hand faced severe striker crisis last season as all their forwards misfired. Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto and Demba Ba were failing to hit the target and the expected arrival of Diego Costa in Chelsea colours might solve their main problem.

If the interest and arrival of Diego Costa to Chelsea was long mooted and awaited, the real surprise was Chelsea’s interest in veteran midfielder Tiago. Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago is set to become a free agent in the summer and Jose Mourinho is planning to bring him back to Chelsea. Chelsea had recently brought back Nemanja Matic for the defensive midfield position, and he is putting on stellar displays in the middle of the park. Back-up and cover is provided in the form of John Obi Mikel, Frank Lampard and versatile Ramires. The need for Tiago is unknown, but he might help his Atletico Madrid team mate Diego Costa to ease into the Premier League.

If the arrival of Tiago was unexpected, Chelsea’s interest in Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luiz is somewhat on the expected line. The departure of Ashley Cole on a free transfer leaves the left back spot vacant at Stamford Bridge. Even though Cesar Azpilicueta did a stellar job in that position, he is primarily a right back and Chelsea will be looking for a left back to improve from Ashley Cole’s reign. Southmapton left back Luke Shaw and Sevlla’s Alberto Moreno were touted as the potential replacements at one stage.

Guardian has reported that Chelsea are zeroing in on Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luiz, and the clubs have opened talks regarding a summer transfer. 28-year-old defender has vast experience in La Liga and in Europe. The Brazilian international who missed out on the World Cup despite a stellar campaign will be looking to put his career back on track as soon as possible.

Filipe Luiz had recently stated that he would like to continue playing for Atletico Madrid, but a move to Chelsea cannot be completely ruled out. The close working relationship might open the way for Chelsea’s triple raid on Atletico Madrid. Can Filipe Luiz fill the void left by Ashley Cole in Chelsea?
