Chelsea FC have reportedly opened talks to sign Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa.

Reports suggest that Chelsea have begun talks with Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa for a possible summer swoop.

Costa, who has been widely tipped for a move away from the Spanish League, has been a subject of transfer speculation surrounding Chelsea, Manchester City and a host of other clubs. Reports now indicate that Jose Mourinho’s club has got talks started regarding a move for the Spanish star in the summer.

Chelsea, who lead the table at the moment have performed exceedingly well this season. The Blues have a tight defence and a wonderful midfield. The place where they do lack is in the strike department. Samuel Eto’o has performed decently since his transfer in the summer, but the player is ageing (there have been many jokes regarding that) and is probably past his prime. The former Barcelona star was also signed for one year. Fernando Torres has constantly been under-par, and has been a shadow of his Liverpool self. Demba Ba has also underperformed since Rafa Bentiez brought the player from Newcastle, and Mourinho does not vest his trust in him, as has been visible by the lack of opportunities. His contract runs out in the summer and he has already been in talks with several clubs across Europe, according to reports. Hence, it is imperative for the London club to reinforce their attack and bring in a quality goal-scorer. Diego Costa is certainly the man to do the job for Chelsea

Costa has been in impressive form throughout the season and has wowed spectators with his prolific nature in front of goal. Together with David Villa, Costa has made sure Atletico Madrid remain in contention of the league throughout the season. The 25 year old has scored 31 goals in 41 games for his side in all competitions.

The Blues tried to sign the Brazil-born forward in January, but the striker did not want to leave the the Vicente Calderon mid-season.  Fernando Torres has always spoken of wanting to return to his old club, Atletico Madrid, and recently spoke of relishing a chance to work under Diego Simeone. Therefore, one can’t rule out the possibility of Chelsea using him ‘as a makeweight in the deal for Costa’, in a player plus cash deal. However, any negotiations will exclude Thibaut Courtois, the 21-year-old goalkeeper who is enjoying his third consecutive season on loan at Atletico from Chelsea as Jose Mourinho regards the young Belgian sensation, his country’s No.1 choice goalkeeper, as the natural successor to Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have even stepped up their bid to convince Thibaut Courtois to sign a new contract and have met with his representatives for more talks over his future at Stamford Bridge.
