Arsenal FC have turned their attention towards Schalke right back Atsuto Uchida as they continue their search for Bacary Sagna’s replacement.
With veteran defender Bacary Sagna on the verge of joining Premier League champions Manchester City, Arsenal are in the market for a new right back. The French international refused to extend his deal with the Gunners as he looked for a big pay-rise in what will be the last big contract of his career and his deputy Carl Jenkinson hasn’t been consistent enough to warrant a regular first team spot.
Arsene Wenger is in the market for a replacement and a host of players have already been linked with the Gunners. Toulouse right back Serge Aurier is believed to be Wenger’s first choice to replace Sagna, but the likes of Micah Richards and Atletico Madrid defender Juanfran have also been linked with a move to the Emirates.
The latest name to be connected with the London club is Schalke right back Atsuto Uchida. The 26-year-old has impressed since joining the German club in 2010 and has been one of the most consistent performers for Schalke in the last two seasons. Uchida, whose current contract expires in 2015, is reportedly in talks with Schalke regarding an extension till 2017.
Despite his age Uchida has already accumulated a lot of experience and has 65 international caps for Japan. Last season he did struggle with his fitness at times and had to compete with Tim Hoogland for the role as the right back in the starting line-up. Schalke could be willing to part ways with the Japanese international, who is comfortable in play both as a right back and a left back, is Arsenal meet their demands. If PSG and Monaco step up their interest in Serge Aurier, Atsuto Uchida could become a viable alternative for Arsene Wenger.
Interestingly, the Gunners have also been heavily linked with a move for Schalke attacker Julian Draxler and could continue their pursuit of the 20-year-old German international.
