Ezequiel Garay has revealed how the appointment of David Moyes hampered his move to Manchester United, while reports suggest Remy Cabella has drawn interest from the United manager.
I was close to joining Manchester United – Ezequiel Garay
Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay has revealed that he was close to joining Manchester United, till Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.
The 27-year-old was linked with a move to the English club since last season. Reports back in March suggested that United had reached an agreement with Benfica for the sale of the Argentine international although the move failed to materialize this summer. But it was evident that Sir Alex wanted to sign Ezequiel Garay.
Even though Rio Ferdinand and Vidic remained Sir Alex’s first choice center back pairing, they had entered the wrong side of thirties and both have been frequently injured in recent times and their fitness is still a cause for concerns. The former United manager believed that Garay would have been an impressive addition to the likes of Jones, Smalling and Evans.
Garay is a classy defender who is good on the ball and has good experience in top level of football for his age. Real Madrid have also kept a close eye on Garay’s future as the Spanish club is entitled for a percentage of the transfer fee involving his sale. But now the Benfica defender has revealed that the retirement of Sir Alex and the appointment of David Moyes hampered his chances of joining the reigning Premier League champions.
“I believed I was going to join Manchester United in the summer. The deal was nearly closed but finally Benfica did not accept the offer.
“I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that’s not a problem.
“I am happy at Benfica and have a lot of dreams and ambitions for this season. Now I only think about the present which is Benfica but it’s never possible to discard anything in the future.” – Garay revealed.
Manchester United step up their interest in Remy Cabella
David Moyes is reportedly interested in signing Montpellier attacking midfielder Remy Cabella when the transfer window reopens in January.
The 23-year-old has had a fine start to this season’s league campaign. He has already scored five goals and provided two assists in the opening eight matches. Earlier Inter Milan and Arsenal were linked with the Frenchman, but recent reports suggest that Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Cabella and is looking to sign him in January.
David Moyes has confirmed that the English club will be active in the winter transfer window as he looks to strengthen the United squad and he is interested in signing an attacking midfielder. The former Everton manager has instructed the Manchester United scouts to monitor his progress at the French club. Meanwhile, the Metro has reported that United are lining up a £15 million bid for the young midfielder. But they will find it hard to convince Montpellier to let go of their prized asset at this price. Cabella’s current contract expires in 2016 and Montpellier president Louis Nicolkin has already stated that it would take a bid of at least ‘£100 million’ for him to leave the club.
Cabella is an exciting young talent, who broke into the Montpellier first team back in 2009 and has slowed made huge progress at the club. He has wonderful vision and technique for his age. While his ball and control and dribbling has seen him draw comparison with Zinedine Zidane. But it is hard to see where David Moyes will fit him into the squad if he does sign him, considering the fact that Wayne Rooney plays in the role in which Cabella prospers, while Shinji Kagawa is struggling to get a consistent run of games in the side. The January transfer window will hold more answers to this as of now.
