Arsenal is now in pole position to finalize the transfer of Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain. Arsenal officials are expected to fly to Madrid on the weekend to tie up the final details of this transfer. Manager Arsene Wenger may also make an appearance during the negotiation process.
The Argentine striker has been a prolific scorer in Santiago Bernabeu but both parties have decided on a mutual separation this summer. Higuain is reportedly valued at 30 million Euros by Real but Arsenal is likely to make a bid for an amount less than 25 million Euros. The Gunners have already held talks with the player and it is believed that Higuain as already accepted the personal terms with them. Higuain may get a 4 year contract with 130,000 pounds/week salary, a club record. Should Arsenal pay the reported amount for him then Higuain will also become the most expensive transfer in Arsenal’s history, overtaking Russian Andrei Arshavin’s 15 million pounds price tag.
Carlo Ancelotti is expected to join Real Madrid some time next week and once he joins he is likely to sanction his transfer which is when it will become official. The Argentine striker may become a part of the Arsenal squad before they embark on their commercial tour to Indonesia on 11th July. Arsene Wenger has a reported war chest of 70 million pounds to spend in transfers this season and Higuain will be his first big transfer and unlikely to be last once with Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney being linked as well.
Higuain was also strongly linked with Juventus. But two things tipped the favour towards Arsenal. First, Juve’s reluctance to pay the transfer fee in cash (there were reports of a cash plus player exchange deal) and also the Italian club was offering a lower salary than that of Arsenal thanks to their salary cap of 4.5 million Euros/year. Clubs like Tottenham Hotspurs and Paris St. Germain have been liked with Higuain as well.
