Arsenal are reportedly ready to make a move for Victor Valdes in the summer while Barcelona are looking at Vermaelen as the long-term replacement for Eric Abidal.
Victor Valdes has been an ever present at Barcelona ever since he made his debut for the first team back in 2002-03 season. Having made 488 appearances for the Catalan side, Valdes has won nearly every honour the game has to offer. But the 31-year-old’s agent has disclosed back in January that Valdes won’t be extending his current contract at Cam Nou, which expires in 2014.
Valdes is reportedly looking to ‘experience different cultures’ and is eyeing a move to the Premier League. Both Manchester United and Liverpool have been linked with a move for the Custodian in the summer and now it seems Arsenal have joined the race.
According to reports in The Sun, Arsene Wenger is looking to provide Szczesny with more competition for the goalkeeping spot and Valdes will bring in a lot of experience along with him. Arsenal are preparing a £10million bid for the Spanish international in the summer, with Barcelona reportedly willing to sell him before his contract expires and he leaves for free.
On the other hand, Barcelona themselves are planning a raid on Arsenal if some other reports are to be believed. The Spanish giants are looking at Thomas Vermaelen as the eventual replacement for Eric Abidal.
There has been growing concerns about how long Abidal would be able to continue playing football at the highest level given his medical condition.
Arsene Wenger has handed over the Captain’s armband to Vermaelen at the start of the season after the Gunners lost Robin van Persie to Manchester United. The 27-year-old did sign a four year contract extension back in 2011, which means that Arsene Wenger will be in no hurry of selling his captain.
But Barcelona are said to planning of involcing David Villa in a part-exchange-deal. The Spanish forward has been linked with the Gunners during the last transfer window. Although it according to recent reports, Arsene Wenger is no longer interested in signing Villa and has instead turned his attention towards a much younger Montenegro international Jovetic.
Vermaelen hasn’t been performing at his best this season. It is yet to be deciphered whether his inconsistent form has got something to do with the added pressure of the captaincy, but it would be interesting to see if Arsenal thinks about letting him go him Barcelona comes along with a bid and offers David Villa in exchange.
