Kanchanchunga Stadium, Siliguri; Kick Off 6:30 PM

As three teams from Goa made to the last four of the 34th edition of the federation cup, defending champions Salgaocar SC lock horns with, the defending I-league champions and arguably the most successful team in the last decade in Indian football, Dempo SC.

Team News and Tactical Brief

Salgaocar SC

Karim Bencharifa in a recent interview said that his team was ready for the any challenge thrown in their way en route to glory this season. This raised quite a few eyebrows as the Moroccan lost many of his first team players in the transfer window and many pundits wrote off his team before the season kicked off. But the shrewdly assimilated team is surely returning dividends at the right time as they are on their way to defend their Federation Cup title.

Salgaocar overcame a tricky Pune FC challenge in the group stages to clinch a semi final spot. The Goan side will be hoping for a repeat of the last year’s final as East Bengal clinched a place in the final yesterday. Here is the Salgaocar journey so far in the tournament:

Salgaocar SC 1-0 Prayag United SC

United Sikkim FC 0-3 Salgaocar SC

Pune FC 1-2 Salgaocar SC

The key focus area of this well knit Salgaocar team clearly lies in playing to their strength. Captain Luciano Sabrosa marshals the defense from back with India international Karanjit Singh holding the fort between the bars. Karim Bencharifa is once again expected to deploy a 4-3-3 formation with new Aussie recruit Sean Rooney up front and Milagres Gonsalves, Anthony D’ Sousa on the flanks. Gilberto Francis and Randeep Singh will make up the attacking midfield for the Goan greens. New recruit Quinton Jacobs would be seen playing just behind the Aussie striker.

Man to watch out for : Anthony D’Sousathree goals so far in the tournmanet.

Expected Starting line-up: Karanjit(GK), Nicolau, Luciano Sabrosa(C), Rahul, Fulganco, Randeep, Quinton Jacobs, Gilberto Francis, Sean Rooney, Milagres, Anthony.

Dempo SC

The national champions started off the Federation cup campaign on a nervy note, but the Armando Colaco mentored side seem to have gradually found their feet on the below average grounds in Jamshedpur. The 2004 champions look to clinch their second Federation Cup title as they face a familiar foe in Salgaocar SC. The Panjim based club had to sweat for qualification from Group A. Here is the summary of the results for Dempo:

Dempo SC 1-1 Pailan Arrows

Shillong Lajong FC 0-1 Dempo SC

Mumbai FC 0-4 Dempo SC

Armando Colaco will be wary of complacency against a side against whom his side has been successful recently, both in the Goa and the I-league. Dempo will be going with Subhashish in the goal with usual suspects- Debabrata, Gawli, Samir and Antao making the back four. Clifford Miranda is expected to start from the left flank with Anthony Perreira on right. Former India captain Climax will be orchestrating the moves from central midfield with Carvalho being placed just in front of the back four, completing the traditional 4-4-2 for Colaco. In absence of new Japanese recruit Ryuji Sueoka, Koko Sakibu is likely to pair up with Joachim Abranches upfront. Sakibo netted the ball thrice in the last match and is in good form.

Man to watch out for: Climax Lawrence the lynchpin of the Dempo midfield.

Expected Starting line-up: Subhasish(GK), Debabrata, Mahesh, Antao, Samir Naik, Climax, Anthony, Clifford, Carvalho, Ryuji Sueoka, Joachim Abranches.

Key Facts

  • Dempo SC, despite being so successful over the last decade has never beaten Salgaocar in Federation Cup.
  • Dempo SC has only one Fed Cup title to their name in 2004.
  • Salgaocar is the most successful Goan team in Federation Cup.

Both the teams have met twice in the history Federation Cup. So far Salgaocar holds a cent percent record in the coveted tournament over their arch rivals, but both these encounters took place before the dominance of Dempo SC began in Indian football. Dempo will certainly like to improve on this stat and would be positive about a final clash with East Bengal on Sunday. Salgaocar appear to be a more cohesive and better trained unit and can clinch this nervy and tense affair.
