Tottenham Hotspur have identified Manchester United target Jan Oblak as the perfect successor for Hugo Lloris.

According to a report by Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur are planning a swoop for Atletico Madrid custodian Jan Oblak, with the North London giants laying down a succession plan for Hugo Lloris. The Slovenian goalkeeper is also a target for Manchester United, but Spurs have already contacted him.

Lloris is expected to leave Tottenham at the end of his current contract, as he will likely try a new avenue in his football career. The 35-year-old has been a loyal servant for the north London giants for almost a decade, and the time to bid adieu to the club captain is nearing.

The France and Tottenham captain did sign a new contract in January, but Sours will honour his wish if he wants to embark on a new journey. The veteran goalkeeper is due to turn 36 this December, and replacing him would be a huge mountain to climb.

Oblak has also been on the radar of Manchester United, who are assessing David de Gea’s imminent future. The Spaniard’s goalkeeping skills have never been in doubt for anyone, but his limited ability on the ball has been exploited a number of times.

Erik ten Hag wants his team to play a particular brand of football, and de Gea does not seem to be comfortable with that. The Manchester United goalkeeper has improved a lot in the last few matches, but there are severe concerns about whether he could be the manager’s go-to keeper going forward. And with several clubs, including Atletico Madrid, keen on signing him, Oblak might be a solution for Manchester United

So it will not be an easy negotiation for Tottenham as they are certain to face stiff competition from Manchester United if Oblak decides to leave Atletico Madrid. The Slovenian international has reiterated his desire to play in the Premier League, and he might fulfil his dream rather sooner than expected.

Antonio Conte’s team is currently unbeaten in the English top-flight, and the Tottenham manager does not want any undue concerns in the middle of a busy season. Spurs have also seen Fraser Forster arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this year, but the Englishman is the second choice in the pecking order and is not viewed as the long-term replacement of Lloris.

Oblak might need some convincing as Tottenham’s inconsistency could force him to alter his plans. The north Londoners have not been able to translate their performances into a trophy, but there are hopes that this could be their breakthrough season.
