Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing up a move for 22-year-old French goalkeeper Illan Meslier as a successor for club captain Hugo Lloris.

Hugo Lloris is in his twilight years, and it is no surprise that Tottenham Hotspur are looking to bring in talented Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier to replace him in the long run.

The 22-year-old French goalkeeper has been outstanding since joining Leeds United, and he has firmly established himself as the first-choice shot-stopper at Elland Road. There is no doubt that Meslier has a bright future ahead of him, and it is no surprise that top clubs, including Tottenham, are already keeping tabs on him.

Lloris has been a key player for Tottenham over the years. Apart from his quality, his leadership skills are invaluable for Spurs. The north Londoners must bring in a top-class replacement for the Frenchman when he decides to call it a day.

Meslier certainly has the potential to develop into one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, and he could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition. The 22-year-old is already one of the best young players in the country.

According to journalist Phil Hay from The Athletic, Tottenham are one of the few clubs interested in signing the Leeds goalkeeper, and it will be interesting to see if Spurs come forward with a concrete offer in the near future.

Phil Hay said on his show, “It’s quite interesting of all the clubs that are looking at Meslier, I think it’s fair to say that he now has replaced Raphinha and Phillips as probably the highest value asset in the squad at Leeds. If clubs are bidding for everybody at Elland Road, he would command the highest fee.

“It’s quite interesting that Spurs are one of the clubs looking at him as Lloris is getting into his mid-30s now and he is out of contract in 2024 and you would assume that Tottenham would now be looking at a succession plan for him. Pretty eventful time for Meslier but this season he has looked better than he ever has and has been a top-class goalkeeper.”

Leeds have recently parted ways with pivotal players like Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha. They will not want to lose another key asset anytime soon. Furthermore, Meslier has a long-term contract with the Whites and Leeds, are likely to demand a premium for the 22-year-old French goalkeeper’s services if Spurs come calling at the end of this season.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is a shrewd negotiator, and it is fair to assume that he won’t pay over the odds for the talented young goalkeeper. It is likely that Tottenham will have their eyes on several other options as they look to bring in a proper long-term replacement for their club captain. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few months.
