Barcelona defender Sergino Dest is reportedly on the verge of completing a deadline-day loan move to Serie A club AC Milan.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona and AC Milan have reached an agreement over a deadline day deal for Sergino Dest. The 21-year-old is set to join the Serie A champions on a season-long loan move, with the Rossoneri reserving an option to buy him permanently next summer for €20 million.

Sergino Dest has endured a topsy turvy ride since joining Barcelona from Ajax two years ago. While the USMNT international has shown flashes of brilliance, he has been unable to perform consistently since arriving at Camp Nou, with Xavi Hernandez not fancying him much since replacing Ronald Koeman as the Barcelona manager last summer.

Dest has been on the fringes of the Barcelona first team in the early stages of the 2022/23 season, with Xavi omitting him from the matchday squads. And the Barcelona boss has been clear about his stance on keeping the 21-year-old in his unit, with the player surplus to requirements at Camp Nou. And his next destination seems to be Serie A.

Recent reports linked Dest heavily with several clubs, with Manchester United reportedly at the forefront of the picture. The Red Devils recently explored a loan move to sign the Barcelona defender. And while Dest is leaving Barcelona on loan, he will join AC Milan instead.

The interest from AC Milan is surprising, considering Davide Calabria has gone from strength to strength at San Siro in the last few years. The Italian international is now also the club captain for the reigning Serie A champions and an indispensable member of Stefano Pioli’s squad.

So it is hard to see how Dest can flourish at AC Milan in the 2022/23 season. Nonetheless, Barcelona will be relieved to get the 21-year-old off the books soon, even if temporarily, with AC Milan set to sign him on a season-long loan deal. The Serie A giants also reserve the option to sign him permanently next summer for €20 million.

Dest will sign a four-year contract lasting until June 30, 2027, if he permanently joins AC Milan next summer. It will be interesting to see how the Barcelona defender fares at the Serie A club when he completes his loan switch to San Siro in the coming hours.
