Manchester United have reportedly been turned down by Matheus Cunha, who is happy at Atletico Madrid and does not wish to leave.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha has turned down an approach from Manchester United as he has no intention to leave the Spanish club this summer.

Manchester United are desperately scouring the market for a new striker as the situation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo continues to remain uncertain. The 37-year-old is said to be keen on securing an exit as his agent, Jorge Mendes, continues to offer him around to clubs. However, there have been no takers so far leading to him staying put.

But, with two weeks left in the window, Ronaldo could still secure a move away. Furthermore, the lack of depth in the position is also a major concern for Manchester United as Anthony Martial is the only other striker on the club’s books. Marcus Rashford can play through the middle but is going through a woeful run of form, making the addition of another goalscorer extremely vital.

Manchester United made efforts to sign Benjamin Sesko but he signed for RB Leipzig, whom he will join next year after spending the current season with Red Bull Salzburg. Moves for several other forwards like Alvaro Morata, Sasa Kalajdzic and Marcus Thuram, among others, are being considered, with Matheus Cunha also emerging as a target for the 20-time English champions.

As per the report, Manchester United approached Atletico Madrid with an offer of around €50 million while also getting in touch with the player’s camp about a possible move to Old Trafford this summer.

Cunha joined Atletico Madrid only last summer, arriving from German outfit Hertha Berlin. The 23-year-old had a middling debut campaign, finishing with seven goals and assists apiece from 37 matches in all competitions. He had to share game-time with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Joao Felix and Angel Correa.

Despite that, Cunha is said to be happy at Atletico Madrid and has thus rejected Manchester United’s approach right out of hand. The Rojiblancos are also uninterested in selling the Brazilian striker despite the high offer from the Premier League giants and made it known that the only way a sale could be possible is if his release clause was triggered.

So, as things stand, Manchester United’s attempt to land Cunha could be set for a disappointing ending, forcing them to look elsewhere for reinforcements in the No. 9 role.
