Chelsea are reportedly weighing up offering their fringe stars to Everton in a swap deal to land Anthony Gordon after Everton rejected their £40 million bid.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are internally contemplating over a fresh proposal for promising winger Anthony Gordon after Everton rejected their opening bid worth £40 million. The Blues are considering a swap deal involving their out-of-favour stars as makeweight, knowing that the Toffees are desperate for attacking reinforcements this summer.

Anthony Gordon joined Everton as an 11-year-old and has already made 62 senior appearances for them since making his first-team debut in December 2017. However, he truly burst onto the scene only last season and has quickly become a fan favourite at his boyhood club.

Gordon made 40 appearances for the Toffees across all competitions last season, scoring four times. And, unsurprisingly, the highly-rated 21-year-old prodigy has attracted significant interest from across the Premier League this summer, after only his first full season in the English top-flight.

Tottenham sought to entice Gordon away from Goodison Park as part of a package deal to acquire Richarlison in July, but the Toffees declined the offer. Newcastle have since registered interest but have been put off by Everton’s refusal to accept a sizable offer. Chelsea have now made a push to sign the young attacker.

The Blues opened talks with the Toffees over the potential signing of Gordon only a couple of days ago. Chelsea have informed the Merseyside outfit that they would be willing to part with £40 million to secure the England Under-21 international’s signature.

However, Everton’s valuation of the 21-year-old is around the £50 million mark. Chelsea are expected to come back in with an improved offer, and if they come close to, or even match, Everton’s valuation, there is a deal to be completed here.

However, after having a £40 million opening bid knocked back for Gordon, the west London club are trying to iron out some kind of swap arrangement that could involve their attacking outcasts heading in the opposite direction. Frank Lampard is interested in bringing more than one Chelsea player to Goodison Park this summer to boost the Toffees’ bid to steer clear of the drop zone.

This suggests that a player-plus-cash deal could be next on the cards, given Everton’s rumoured recent interest in Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher.

Everton have yet to bring in a replacement for Richarlison, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is once again sidelined due to injury. That has led to Gordon operating as a makeshift No 9 for Everton in the opening two league games, with both ending in defeats, leaving Lampard in desperate need of a reliable centre-forward before the summer window slams shut.

While on loan at Southampton last season, Broja demonstrated his ability to play in the Premier League, scoring six goals and impressed the onlookers with his searing pace and versatility. It remains to be seen if the two teams can come to an agreement and which Chelsea players move the other way if a part-exchange deal is struck.
