Everton are closing in on Wolves captain Conor Coady, with the deal set to be a loan with a buy clause at the end of the term.

According to Paul Joyce, Everton are edging closer to bringing Conor Coady from Wolves in the coming days. The deal between the two clubs is in its advanced stage, with the Wolves captain set to sign on loan with a buy clause in the contract.

Frank Lampard continues to search for quality reinforcements to bolster his squad and avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles, with Coady emerging as a key target. The England international has been a crucial player for the Midlands club but is now close to joining the Toffees.

Coady has been at Wolves for seven years now after arriving from Huddersfield in 2015 for £2.5 million. The Liverpool-born defender has been the centre-piece at the club, helping them gain promotion and become a mainstay in the Premier League.

However, it looks like it is time for the defender to take up a new challenge, and hence the decision has been made by Coady to join a new side. Everton have been keen on the centre-back for some time but accelerated their interest in the last few days.

The Toffees may have lost Ben Godfrey to a possible long-term injury during their loss against Chelsea. Additionally, there remain concerns with Yerry Mina’s fitness, who seems to have suffered a relapse of a calf problem. Hence, a new centre-back is considered necessary at Goodison Park, and Coady will be the player to shore up the backline.

Coady, 29, has been a solid defender in the Premier League and would certainly add quality to Everton’s rearguard. The news of him joining Everton accelerated on Sunday, with multiple outlets reporting the probable transfer.

According to Paul Joyce and Fabrizio Romano, there could be an agreement between the clubs over a transfer, and personal terms are also close to being agreed upon. Coady wants the move, which could initially be a loan deal with a buy clause inserted in the contract.

Coady would be a fantastic signing for the Toffees, who are expected to struggle again this term after a horrendous campaign last season. Losing Richarlison was a blow, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury further added to their woes. However, some new incomings are sure to elevate the mood and the overall quality of a side that did look a bit more robust under Lampard during their season-opener.

Everton have already signed James Tarkowski from Burnley and are investing around €40 million in Amadou Onana from Lille. A player like Coady, in partnership with Tarkowski, will likely help them protect the goal much better than their current options.
