West Ham United are reportedly considering a move for 23-year-old French defender Dan-Axel Zagadou as David Moyes seeks defensive reinforcements.

According to The Sun, West Ham United are interested in signing Dan-Axel Zagadou on a free transfer but face competition from AS Roma for the giant French defender. New signing Nayef Aguerd’s injury and Issa Diop’s possible departure have increased the need for a new centre-half at the London Stadium, with the ex-Borussia Dortmund man considered ideal despite fitness concerns.

Dan-Axel Zagadou’s career has spiralled out of relevance in the last few years as persistent injury problems have derailed a promising future. His playing statistics indicate a worrying trend, which has seen him play just over 90 games in the last five years.

The French defender did show some promising signs last term, but Dortmund decided against renewing his contract. The 23-year-old is a free agent, and clubs have been keen on signing him, including Manchester United and Inter Milan at one stage, although the interest from those clubs might have faded now.

West Ham United are reportedly keen on signing Zagadou, as David Moyes seeks defensive reinforcements after some developments with his squad. Summer signing Nayef Aguerd suffered an injury in pre-season and has since undergone ankle surgery.

Aguerd is expected to remain sidelined for at least three months, which calls for immediate reinforcements to the West Ham squad. Moreover, there is a chance for Issa Diop to depart from the London Stadium, with Fulham reportedly interested in him.

Zagadou could be a good fit for West Ham’s physical profile, although Moyes will have to take a hard look at his fitness record. If suitable, the West Ham boss could look to bring the ‘free agent’ to the London Stadium. However, the Hammers face tough competition from AS Roma for the 23-year-old French defender.

Jose Mourinho is also keen after cracking some terrific deals for Paulo Dybala and Georginio Wijnaldum. Bringing in a promising defender like Zagadou would represent a solid window for the Italian giants. However, switching to the Premier League could tempt the ex-Borussia Dortmund star.

Before his injury problems began, Zagadou was regarded as one of the most promising defenders on the continent. Moyes could look to develop him further at West Ham and probably help solve some of the fitness problems persisting with the player.
