London giants Chelsea have reportedly offered Barcelona €70 million and Marcos Alonso to sign Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona will have an important offer from Chelsea to consider. The Blues have proposed €70 million and Barcelona’s top target Marcos Alonso to the Blaugrana to sign Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the ongoing transfer window.

Frenkie de Jong is in a situation that best exemplifies the “rock and a hard place” predicament. The 25-year-old does not want to leave Barcelona despite the Catalan giants’ best attempts to get him off their books to lighten the wage bill and register new signings in La Liga. But he will have to take a pay cut if he remains at Camp Nou.

The “deferred wages” issue is well-documented, and de Jong’s eagerness to continue his stint with Barcelona is understandable. The Dutch midfielder has barely done anything wrong to be transfer-listed by Barcelona apart from being one of their top earners. Nonetheless, his situation has alerted Chelsea.

Recent reports have billed Chelsea as the favourites to sign de Jong from Barcelona, with the west London club reportedly preparing an offer to secure his services. And according to SPORT, that proposal is worth €70 million, with Chelsea also giving Barcelona the opportunity to sign Marcos Alonso as part of the deal.

Alonso is a top target for Barcelona this summer, with recent reports claiming the Catalan giants are confident of signing the Spanish international. But negotiations between the Blaugrana and Chelsea have dragged on for months, and accepting Chelsea’s latest proposal might be in Barcelona’s best interest.

Accepting Chelsea’s €70 million-plus-Alonso offer will help Barcelona rake in nearly their desired valuation from de Jong’s sale while getting his wages off their books. At the same time, they will also succeed in securing Alonso’s services after stretched talks. The Spanish full-back will also get his desired move after recently taking Chelsea’s permission to not feature in Chelsea’s opening game.

Chelsea and Barcelona continue to work on the deal to sign de Jong, and a quick resolution will help the Blaugrana focus on signing Bernardo Silva. Meanwhile, it looks like Manchester United will not sign de Jong, who never wanted to join the Red Devils anyway.
