Catalan giants Barcelona are reportedly considering re-signing 22-year-old Spanish full-back Mateu Morey from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Mateu Morey is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old Borussia Dortmund full-back has emerged as an alternative to Cesar Azpilicueta.

Mateu Morey spent his formative years with four Spanish clubs, including Barcelona. The young full-back joined the Blaugrana in 2015 before graduating from the club’s famed La Masia academy four years later. But the Spaniard never settled down at the Catalan club, leaving Barcelona to move to Borussia Dortmund in 2019.

The move to the Bundesliga club has not worked for the 22-year-old, with fitness issues hampering his progress considerably. Morey has managed only 29 appearances since making his first-team debut in May 2020. But he remains highly rated in Europe, with Barcelona weighing up re-signing him in the summer transfer window.

The Catalan giants are eager to bolster the full-back department to cap off a memorable summer transfer window. Chelsea duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are the priority targets for Barcelona for the two wide defensive positions. But the Blues are blocking moves for the two Spaniards, with Thomas Tuchel recently asserting that he could stop Azpilicueta from joining Barcelona.

The Blaugrana will thus have to scour the market for alternatives, despite reportedly planning fresh talks with Chelsea for Azpilicueta. Mateu Morey has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, with the 22-year-old having a point to prove after departing from Camp Nou to join Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund a few years ago.

But keeping Morey’s fitness issues in mind, the Catalan giants should keep their options open, with Hugo Mallo among their prospective targets. As for Morey, the 22-year-old Spanish full-back might consider rejoining Barcelona this summer for a fresh start after a few forgettable campaigns with Borussia Dortmund.

It will be interesting to see if Barcelona will firm up their interest in Morey in the coming days. Pursuing alternatives will depend on what transpires in their chase of Azpilicueta, with the veteran defender looking likely to remain at Chelsea beyond the summer transfer window.
