Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for newly-promoted Premier League club Fulham.

According to The Sun, Fulham have trained their sights on signing Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard in the ongoing transfer window as Marco Silva continues to look for reinforcements at the back.

Vestergaard signed for Leicester City only last summer, arriving from Southampton in a deal worth £16 million. The Danish international arrived after a solid three-year stint at St. Mary’s but endured a disappointing debut campaign with the Foxes. He failed to establish himself in Brendan Rodgers’ side and made only ten Premier League appearances.

Despite his struggles last season, Vestergaard’s reputation seemingly remains intact as Fulham are now considering making a swoop for the 29-year-old defender.

Having achieved promotion back to the Premier League by winning the EFL Championship last season, Fulham are keen on adding more depth and quality to their roster so that they can survive the ordeals of top-flight football and avoid relegation.

To that end, manager Marco Silva has already made four signings, but the transfer business at Craven Cottage is far from done. The Portuguese tactician remains intent on signing at least one new centre-back, and understandably so after Fulham lost Alfie Mawson and Michael Hector this summer, following the expiry of their contracts.

It has left Fulham with just Tosin Adarabioyo, Tim Ream and Terence Kongolo as the options at centre-back, forcing them into the market for reinforcements. A move for West Ham United’s Issa Diop has been in the works, but the two clubs are yet to reach an agreement. The Cottagers have also tabled an offer for Chelsea’s Malang Sarr, but the Blues are unlikely to sell the 23-year-old.

Thus, Fulham are keeping their options open and have identified Vestergaard as a possible option. Leicester City value the defender at £12 million and could be open to a sale as Rodgers wishes to refresh his squad. However, the future of Wesley Fofana could dictate the fate of this transfer amidst the Frenchman’s links with a move to Chelsea.

If Fofana ends up leaving the King Power Stadium, Leicester City would be unlikely to sanction Vestergaard’s departure. It remains to be seen how this transfer story unfolds in the coming days as Fulham up the ante in their pursuit of a new centre-half.
