Manchester United’s pursuit of Frenkie de Jong is in the endgame, with the Red Devils reportedly preparing their final offer for the Barcelona midfielder.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Manchester United will soon bring the Frenkie de Jong saga to a close as they prepare their final offer for the Barcelona midfielder. The Red Devils will set their sights on alternatives if the latest proposal does not do the trick.

The Frenkie de Jong transfer saga has been one of the defining stories of the summer transfer window thus far. The Dutch midfielder has been the scapegoat for Barcelona to lighten the wage bill and register the new signings while the two parties haggle over deferred wages. All this while, the Blaugrana and Manchester United have agreed to a deal for de Jong.

But the 25-year-old has no interest in joining Manchester United this summer as he does not want to play in the UEFA Europa League in the upcoming season. At the same time, de Jong is keen on remaining at FC Barcelona beyond the summer transfer window, the issue of deferred wages notwithstanding.

The Red Devils need to invest in a new midfielder this summer after seeing Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba depart from Old Trafford. Pogba’s exit, in particular, has hampered Manchester United creatively, despite the arrival of Christian Eriksen on a free transfer.

Frenkie de Jong has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester United, with the Red Devils reportedly ready to offer a lucrative contract to tempt the Barcelona midfielder. But de Jong has resisted Manchester United’s overtures thus far, and he is reluctant to leave Barcelona.

But the Premier League will soon offer their final proposal to de Jong, which they believe should be tempting enough to seal the deal. But Manchester United will re-enter the market to identify the alternatives if de Jong remains steadfast on his stance, despite Barcelona’s desperation to offload him.

Meanwhile, the Catalan giants continue to look for ways to offload de Jong, with recent reports claiming they are considering loaning him out. At the same time, Xavi Hernandez and Barcelona president Joan Laporta maintain that they will not sell the Dutch midfielder. So there is no realistic chance of de Jong leaving Barcelona, not least to join Manchester United.
