Everton have been offered the opportunity to re-sign Idrissa Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain.

According to inews, Premier League club Everton are in a position where they can re-sign former midfield general Idrissa Gueye from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The 32-year-old spent three seasons at Goodison Park between 2016-2019 before moving to Parc des Princes. His time on Merseyside was a successful one, with Gueye providing the Toffees with the muscle in the middle of the park.

A defensive midfielder with an eye for a tackle, Gueye is a combative player who thrived in the English Premier League. He is also a good passer of the ball and does get forward when the opportunity presents itself. All in all, he is a dynamic presence in the middle of the park if used right.

Frank Lampard’s side staved off relegation by a whisker last season and could once again be in the thick of things next season. The Toffees have signed three players in James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil from Burnley and Sporting CP wing-back Ruben Vinagre. Next on their radar is a midfielder, and Gueye fits the profile perfectly.

Talks have already taken place with PSG, and it remains to be seen how they progress in the coming days. With the season just days away, Everton will do well to wrap up negotiations as soon as possible.

PSG are ready to sell Gueye and the veteran’s time at the French capital appears to be drawing to a close. Perhaps an indicator of things to come, Gueye was not selected for the club’s pre-season trip to Japan. With just a year left on his deal at Parc des Princes, the time is ripe for PSG to cash in.

Everton’s lack of match winners is a major concern, especially considering the teams around them. The likes of Aston Villa, Leeds United and Newcastle United, among others, have strengthened and will be aiming to improve upon last season’s performances. Lampard’s managerial record has been sketchy so far, and he will do well to build a spine that can lead Everton both on and off the field.

And Gueye could be a part of the setup, even if he would not be a long-term solution for the Toffees. Whether a return to Goodison Park materialises for the midfielder will be interesting to see.
